BEST FIELD OF WHEAT.
$. A CANTERBURY COMPETITION. (From Our Special Correspondent.) Christchurch, March 16. The sub-committee appointed by the Ellesmero A. and P. Association to superintend the competition for the prize of £b given by Mr. J. Rennic for the best field of wheat grown,in; .the districtjduring the last season came to a decision on Tuesday. A good deal of interest has been taken in the competition by farmers throughout the district, as it is understood that it is the first of its kind 'hat has. taken place in Canterbury. Points were awarded for yield, typo of grain, freedom from weeds, and appearance of the grain. The sub-committee inspected the fields of grain shor f ly after the wheat came into ear, the crops having been threshed, samples of the grain were available for inspection by the sub-com-mittee ,on Tuesday.' The first and second prize-winning fields were' Hunter's wheat, the third Bordier, the fourth Pearl, and the fifth Hunter's. The yields per acre were as follow:—Mr. E, C. Imvood (Southbridge), 42.7 bushels; Mr. H. M. Hay (Leeston), i 2.6 bushels; Mr. W. Young (Invell), 11.5 bushels;-Mr. Abbott (Southbridge), i\ bushels; Mr. Johnston (Dunsandel), 33 bushels. The fields ranged in size from 18 to 32 acres.'
