THE TRAMWAY CONFERENCE.
WAGES'AND THE ROSTER. It is announced that tho Tramway Conference, at which a City Council subcommittee met representatives of the local Tramway Uniou in reference to a new working agreement, will resumo at the Town Hall on Tuesday evening next at 7.30 p.m. It is stated on good authority that matters' are not yet by any means ripo for' an agreement. City Council officials have for somo time past been engaged in an exhaustive review of thp roster submitted by the union. The latter body still retains in its possession a "key," possession of which by tho council would make it much easier to assess tho actual value of the roster. Meantime the question of wages remains in abeyance. It is a view taken by a local resident, well-informed in the matter of tramway management, that in laying aside other concerns to discuss the merits of a roster, council and union have wandered to a serious extent from- the right track.. This informant holds tho opinion that tho question of wages, which after all is the maiu issue at stake, Should bo settled independently. An improved roster, he points out, may entitle the person by whom it is produced to reward, but should not-be allowed to come between a corporation and its employees whon they agree to confer as to rates of p>iy ment.
