« ■ The postal authorities advise that the s.s. Victoria, which left Sydney at noon on March 15 for Auckland, has on board an Australian mail, also an English mail via Suez. The Wellington portion is due to arrive here on Monday, March 20. Monev order and postal correspondence for Post Office Box 367, Christchurch, is forbidden by the Postmaster-General, on the ground that the person having that address is "engaged in receiving money as the consideration for an assurance or agreement implied, to pay money on events relating to horse-races.". The tender of Mr. E. S. Knight for the erection of an infant schoolroom at the Lower ilutfc has been accepted by the Education Board. A meeting- of the sub-committee appointed to assist the Trades Council in securing signatures to the Saturday halfholiday petition will be held this evening, when the petitions in the hands of individual members will be returned. Those interested in the movement consider it certain that over 5000 names will be attached to the petitions. This number is confidently expected to guarantee a poll on the question. A congress of delegates representative of branches of the New Zealand Labour party is to be held in Christchurch at Easter after the Trades Council Conference. At present there aro nine branches, of the party in existence, but it is expected that further branches will be formed before (he congress begins. The main busincs of the congress will be to outline a scheme of organising the-cam-paign for the general elections in November. The delegates to' represent Wellington will bo elected at next week's meeting of the party. Up to the present the four grocers' unions in the centres have not been federated. Some time ago, however, the Auckland Grocers' Union approached the other three unions with the object of forming a federation. Replies to hand from all the bodies concerned indicate full agreement with the proposal and in view of the replies the Auckland Union is arranging for a conference of representatives of each union to draw up a draft constitution and arrange preliminaries for the organisation of the federation. The conference will probably bo held at Christchurch. at Easter at the conclusion of the Trades Council Conference. Tho Chief Justice will sit at 10.30 this morning and deliver judgment in the cases of Patena Kerehi and others v. Taitumu Marangataua and others (Oka.hukura Block), Kasson and others v. W. 11. Brightwcll, and M'LeodJ Weir, and Hopkirk v. the same. He' will afterwards hear the case of Kobert Johnston v. Frederick John William Gascoyne and Henry John Ferguson, claim for execution of assignment and .E2500 damages for alleged breach of contract. An Order-in-Council, approving of the plan of a bridge across the Wanganui liiver, opposite Dublin Street, and authorising the construction, is gnssertcd. Says our Fcatlierj-ton correspondent:— The'Waii-arapa Kacii.g Club has supplied to ll|o military cnnpi at Tauhcrinikau a large quantity of chairs, tables, and other furniture, and alto ct.vc the Defence -Department permission to u.-e the drive through the course fc-r purposes of traffic to the camp. The following resolution was passed "at the last meeting of stewards:—"The stewards of the Wairara)ia liacing Club, with a desire to show their sympathy with the defence training scheme, .will Grant the use of their grounds and furniture to the military camp free of charge." The secretary was instructed to convey this resolution by letter to (jeneral Godley. The tender of Messrs. Sanders Brothers lias been accepted for the erection of- a. tliree-storv brick workhouse for Mr Christopher Smith at the rear of his present premises in Cuba Street. There were 18 tenders. Mr. J. Charlosworth is the architect.
