Correspondent.} Napier, March 15. There was glorious weather for Cup Day at Nnpier, and a large crowd turned up to witness the racing. The totnlisator staff was kept very busy the wholo day, but-the money was well handled. Layers of odds were barred from the course, and several ex-bookmakers, who Imd horses engaged at the meeting, were not allowed to see them perform. By common consent, (ho candidates were voted a bad lot in tho Hack Hurdles, and Dorando, who has more experienco than the others, was the best backed. He might have won had different tactics been adopted. Cauldron was tho pilot over the first fence, but ho turned over at the next one, and left Kildonan in charge. Down the back Rabbiter joined him, and they led Donzel, on whom Flymi was riding a nice race, and Dorando. At the turn Artie challenged, and so did Dorando. Kildonan led till the last stride, when Art.io headed him. Dorando was a. good third. Allurement was the elect of backers in the Esk Handicap, and she pulled them through very easily. Winning Post, in number one berth, was first away, but Allurement soon had her measure, and in the straight camo away and won easily Perceler showed up well Iho whole vay and just missed third place. Cullinan R ot a lucky run on the rails, and got second place. Winning Post Dui=hcd badly. ' Moree set out at a fast, pace, in the Cup, nnd. led all down the back, with Parable nearly a furlong behind. Across

the bottom Rauparalia and Julian were just in behind I'ort William and Ariom; while Moree had dropped back, lu the straight Woodl.iey came with a fast run, liul J''ort William easily lickl Ins own, wni.lo Kaiipuraliii. Arioin, amt WoacMiuy finished in a line. Parable was tailed off the whole wny, and her form was very bad. Iney also ran badly for a wellifancied candidate. Woodhey met with somo interference.at Iho home turn or sho would have been second. The winner scored very easily. Jiirkline, with 11. Gray in the saddle, was a strong tip in the Trial Stakes, and he iron very comfortably. The Karaniu two-year-old. Elfbolt, was first off, followed by Bravest. Across the bottohi Elf.boll was headed by Bravest, and Ihn latter was joined by Birkline in the straight. From this out Birklinri had ina'tlers all his own way and won comfortably.' The winner is a member of F. Porter'sAwapuni team, and is more than useful.' Despilc their previous failures, Mr. E. J. Watt's colours (on Cheddar) were the favourite fancy in the Welter. Erin and' Falsetto went out very fast, but after go: ing half a mile Falsetto was dono with, and Erin led round the bend and into tho straight. Here Cheddar shook off San Lass, who had been with him up to this, and tackled tho leader. In a good finish the favourite won in fast time by a clear length. Toanga was a neck away. San Lass and Hiriui were in the next ord^r. Altear moved best in tho preliminary before the Sapling Stakes, and he was installed a vory hot favourite. There was a lot of delay at the barrier caused by Italian refusing to go up to the tape. When a start was effected Altear and Bellah got badly left. Our Queen led Blue Lake and Gold Bond to the turn, where Blue Lake dropped back. Gold Bond easily disposed of Our Queen in the run home. Beilah finished fast and got third money, with Blue Lake next. Manupai won the Hack Welter from a big field. This made the' fourth winner ridden by 11. Gray during the afternoon. Mclologue was first off in a straggling start, with Manupai next, but, at the end nf.a furlong, the rear division came with a rush, and nearly all the field were being ridden to keep their places. Meiry Lad took charge down the back, but Manupai went with him, and the others were strung out. The favourite was first into tho straight and Merry Lad, running v;ide. scattered the remainder. Composed and Melologue had a good set-to for second place. Kohupatiki got away badly, but was close up fourth. Virtue was last. ■There were only five runners in the final event, and it went to Faunus, who scored rather easily. Lord Soult kept him company for half the journey, when he retired, and Tigerine took second place. Lord Possible was hard ridden across the bottom, but he could make no impression on the other pair. Faunus won by • three lengths. Moreykoff' was a bad last. ' •
