LAKE KANIERI. (From Our Special Correspondent.) Three Greymouth residents—Messrs. J, K. Campbell, L. Broud, and J. Fenn— cycled lo Kanicri niul back recently. They spent some time fishing on the lake and succeeded in landing a IMb. trout. At the head oi' the lake dc<?r were econ browsing in company with a herd of cattle, and wild gouts were encountered in largo numbers. Pigeons, too, wore numerous nil over the district, but as they are protected, the party wns forced to leave them severely alone. It is evident from the experiences of the party that Lake. Kanicri and the adjacent country is likely to attract many' sportsmen in , the near (uture. BOROUGH BY-LAWS. When the case against J. A. EiK:en« hardt, who was charged with breaking the borough by-law, by altering a building within the brick area, without having obtained a permit to do so, , was called on Monday morning at the Magistrate's Court, Greymouth, the defendant's solicitor applied for a fortnight's adjournment as tho Town Clerk was too ill to attend, and his evidence was indispensable. The magistrate granted an adjournment until March 20 on the understanding that the defendant would bo liable, if he proceeded with the work, and that meantime the Town Clerk's evidence would be taken and produced when llio caso was resumed. ■•>.. FIRE BRIGADES' PICNIC;. On Monday visiting firemen were treated to a picnic, at Mahinapua, and, as the weather was glorious, thev revelled iu the scenic beauties of the lake and its neighbourhood. The firemen who attended the demonstration at Hokitika last week have all left for their homes. They expressed themselves as very well pleased with the manner in which they had been entertained. Before the West Coast representatives disperse;! they held a meeting at which it was decided to form an executive whose duties would consist.in iuaugnr.itin« competitions and providing prizes with the object of improving the fire service. A meeting of delegates will toko nlace at an enrly date when rules will be adopted. Mr. A. Andrews was ap. pointed secretary. LAWN TENNIS. The cup presented by Mr. Fergusbn, president of tho Greymouth Lawn.Tennis Club, was won after a hard and exciting contest by Miss Borthelsen who defeated Miss 0. Stanford by IT points. A match between the B players and a team from Hokitika is being arranged for St. Patrick's Day. GREYMOUTH lIARBOU.R BOARD. At its last mooting, tho Greymouth Harbour Board adopted the following recommendation of tho executive wita regard to an application made by Messrs. C. Smith, of Wellington, •. and J. D. Lynch, of Greymouth, to have the old account' for royalty owing by the Bruunor mine proprietors written off:— "The board is recommended to accept a promissory noto for .£535 Bs. 10u., payable in twelve months from tho dato of signing, being one-third : of the royalty duo up to September 30, 1010, provided the current royalty is paid promptly every month, and that Messrs. Smith and Lynch give the board ii written guarantee that they will carry out tho conditions." The board's action did not meet with general approval, for, tho Greymouth Wharf Labourers' Union forthwith held a meeting, at which a resolution of protest was carried. The secretary of the Harbour Board was instructed to telegraph the resolution to the Minister for Marine. Among tho correspondence road at the' board's meeting was'a letter from Mr. W. Morris, chairman of the West Coast Timber Company, in which he strongly objected to the proposal to charge.an additional wharfage of a penny per 100ft''on' timber exported from tlie town, as the sawmillers were already paying, twopence per 100 ft. .: The Hon. A. R. Guinness spoke forcibly on behalf bf tho millers, who' had for.boiuc.years V&h. trading under.groat difficulties,, and urged, that'inasmuch as the-cloud of depression was lifting, to -hamper the.industry by the imposition of tho proposed tax would bo most unjust. ' • :'. It was resslved that a copy of Mr. Morris's letter bo forwarder to tho Minister for Marine. DISTRICT. HEALTH OFFICER. A mooting of delegates from the Grey, Inangahua, and Westland Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards was held" on Wednesday morning at tho office of the. . Grey County Council, Dr. Finch (Chief Health Officer) presiding. Tho chairman explained that tho meeting was called for the purpose of considering the advisability of .appointinpr a. trained inspector, whose duties would consist of supervising > the sanitary arrangements of the West Coast, and of reporting on applications for charitable aid and admission to tho hospitals. There would be no difliculty, he maintained, in procuring a suitable man, at a salary of dGIBS per annum aid travelling expenses. The representative of the Westland Board d-eclining to combine with the other boards, it was ultimately resolved that Dr. Finch appoint a man who will act for both the Grey and the Tnangahnn districts, and that the controlling committee consist cf five members, Grey appointing three and Inaugahua two. The report complained of the larga number of unpaid subscriptions, and a forcible appeal was made to defaulters to make promp.t payment of their overdue accounts. The residence of Mr. Michael Hannan, • Crown Prosecutor, was totally destroyed bv fire recently. When the alarm was riven the fianies bad obtained such a hold of the building that it was impossible to save any of the furniture and other contents and Mr. Hanucm and Ins family had barely time to escape. Hie insurances are said to liave been .£I3OO, but this amount will by no means comnonsalo for the loss. Mr. Harmon's valuable law library, as well as many important legal documents, .that cannot be re- . placed, were burnt.
