Dr. Jowett, of Birmingham', who has accepted a "call" to the Fifth Avenuo Presbyterian- Church, New York, says he hopes that his going to America will prove what the King thought when ho recently saw him and wished that, ho might be a link between ,tho two peoples, helping to hand them more firmly together. Sir Edward Grey's work regarding the proposed unlimited Arbitration Treaty was pregnant with tremendous issues. On behalf of England's Protestants he could express to their' cousins across the sea their deep desire for such a treaty. ~ HUGE SALARY OFFERED. The Rev. Dr. J. H. Jowetf, pastor of Carr's Lane Congregational Church, Birmingham, received a second "call" to the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York, in January. The "Christian World" States that the' salary offered at Fifth Avenue is about .£3500 a year, with a manse which is worth ,£IOUO a year. Dr. Jowett states that he will accept only an equivalent salary to that paid him id Birmingham. Dr. Jowett received his first invitation to thfi Fifth Avenue Church about a year ago. When he announced to his congregation at Birmingham on that occasion that he had declined the invitation th 6 statement was received with loud applause, and many persons present started to siug the Doxology. Dr. Jowett Was born in. 1864, and has been in Birmingham since 1805. Carr's Lane Church has only had three pastors in 100 years, and each has ranked as a foremost Nonconformist divine of his time—viz., the Rev. John Angel James, the Rev. R. W. Dale, and the R«v. J. H. Jowett. ' ■
