' CHINESE AND SHOP-CLOSING. :(By Tclegraph.-Srjecial Correspondent.) Palmerston North, March 15. The carly-dosiug movement caino into force in Palracrston on Monday evening, the whole of the shops, except those selling perishable goods, such as fruit, etc., closing at 6 p.m. This was brought about by requisition under the provisions of the Shops and Offices Act. It is stated, hpwever, there is likely to be trouble with Epmo of the Chinese, who have combined fruit and grocery shops.. To get oyer.the difficulty, some of the Chinese have erected movable partitions, which they put up to cover the grocery portion of their businesses at six o'clock. Cases are likely to be brought in the Magistrate's Court to test the matter. iTho Kairanga County Council, which met yesterday, adjourned for a couple of ■hours out of ••respect to Councillors C. Voss and A. It. Mayo, who have within the last few days suffered bereavements in their families. Tho Terrace School Committee held its monthly meeting last night, Mr. J. A. Nash being in the chair. 4 A cheque for £6 ss. was received from the Education Board, being half cost of asphalting tho school yard. Mr. F. Fairbrother, headmaster, reported tho school roll at 414, with an average attendance of 379, which was considered fairly satisfactory. Though recent additions had been made, the school was full, but not yet over-crowded. The resignation of" Mr. A. A. Pratt, as a member of the committee, was accepted with regret. It was decided to make further improvements to the grounds, and Messrs. Zortt and Tregurtha were appointed visiting members for the month. A ballot of the Star-Bowkett Society last evening resulted in Messrs. W. E. Jones and A. Tingey drawing ,£IOO each. The Technical Cadets have completed their first competition at the 200 and 500 yards-ranges, the highest scores being: Private J. Barnard, 56 (handicap 8); Colour-Sergeant W. Sexton, 55 (handicap fi); Lance-Corporal F. Hill, 55 (handicap 12); Sergeant C. Perrin, 55 (handicap 18). The Kairangri County Council met yesterday, Councillor Moody presiding, but there was little business to transact, and most of it was merely routine. Messrs. J. W. M'Carty and T. Bastin, the inventors of a new road grader, presented the council with the first completed machine. Mrs. A. Buchanan, of Jersey Holme, Palmerston, left yesterday on a somewhat prolonged visit to Australia.
