' \ BONED SHOULDER OF MUTTON. a Saw off the knuckle and then removo ? the blade bone, taking care not to dis-tm-b the outer shape of tho shoulder. . Fill the cavity with goose stuffing, . skewer or tio it up, and bake for about two hours. GOOSE STUFFING. Half a nound of onions, half cooked and'finely"choppedj eight sage leaves finely chopped, three ounces breadcrumbs, one ounje butter, pepper and salt- to taste. Mix all the ingredients together and use. ' FOR TO-MORROW. Hnpuka, two dozen oysters, French beans, apples, pastry, lemon. . . - SOCIAL AND PERSONAL, An Eketahuna Wedding. On Tuesday mornins at St. Cuthbert's Church, Eketahuna, the marriage was celebrated of Mr. John D, Gordon, son of Mr. P. Gordon, Masterton, and Miss Linda Mabel Waldin, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. K. Waldin, of Rongomai. The Rev. Walker performed the. ceremony. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a pretty cream silk* frock, witn the customary veil and orange blossoms, and carried a handsome shower bouquet. The bridesmaids were Miss Ka:e Waldin '(sister of the.bride)., and Miss Grace Gordon (sister of the bridegroom), both wearing white muslin' frocks and black hat?, and carrying pretty shower bouquets. Mr. H. Gordon ttended the bridegroom'as best man, and Mr. J. Bright as groomsman. The brides present from the bridegroom was a gold watch and chain, and to the-bridesmaids were given nearl pendants and chains. After the ceremony a reception was held, when the bride and bridegroom were the recipients of good wishes irom many friends. Wedding at Napier. On Tuesday afternoon a very pretty wedding was celebrated in the Cathedral, Napier, when Miss Elsie Lilian Smith, only daughter of Mr. J. A. Smith, oi Napier, was married to Mr. J. M. Gouldsmith, of Gisborue. Tho ceremony was performed by Canon Mayne, and Mr. Weber presided at tho organ. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a very handsome dross of white satin, with a tunic of ninon embroidered with pearls. She also wore a beautiful veil of old Limerick, lace, belonging to her grandmother. She was attended by two jridesmaids, Miss Chrisp (Gisbbrne) and Miss Couper (cousin), both wearing white Swiss muslin frocks and quaint caps of laco and muslin. The bride carried n picturesque sheaf of white flowers, and he bridesmaids , shower bouquets, the gift of the bridegroom. After tho ceremonial reception was held at the home of the bride's parents, Mrs. Smith wearing a frock of stone blue ninon over satin charmcuse, and a black- picture hat. Mr. mid Mrs. Gonldsmith are leaving shortly on a trip to England. Women's Social and Political League, A very enjoyable picnic was held yesterday afternoon atLyallßay by the members of tho Women's Social-and. Political League. Comnetitions of various kinds, for which trophies had been donated by Mr. A. Corrigan, Mr..;.-Tucker, jeweller, and a giver who desired to remain unknown; were held, and afforded a good deal of amusement. Afternoon tea was provided by Mr. Mcore,' of the;Lyall Bay Tea Rooms, and wasVgreatly, appreciated. At 'the close of tho afternoon much appreciation was expressed of the energetic efforts mado by the committee and Mrs. Moore (secretary) for ' the enjoyment of those attending the picnic, A Farewell Gathering. • A pleasant function took place at Mrs. Godber's residence, Marion Street, yesterday afternoon, when between thirty and forty old friends met .to say farewell to Mrs. Davidson, who is leaving shortly to take up her residence in-Auck-land. In the course of the afternoon Mrs. Davidson was presented with a Queen Ann silver teapot, and also a theosophical jewel. Expressions of regret were made by several present at Mrs. Davidson's departure, and heartfelt wishes for her future success. A Swimming Club's Progress. , A team of ladies, belonging' to tho Seagull Swimming Club, trained by Miss Olive Arthur, holder of the Royal Life Saving Society's award of merit, and nowpossessor of an instructress's certificate, underwent an examination for life-saving proficiency recently. The Examination Committee, consisted of Messrs. G. H. Nral and A. A. Sommerville. Misses Olive King and Emelie Lcchauri qualified for the bronze medallion, and Misses Irene M. Tandy, Mona A. Butler, Ida L. Thompson, and-.Maude J. ; Brown for the proficiency certificate. Miss Brown, one of the candidates, is only eleven years of age;'and there are others not very much older. All tho competitors showed 'an expert knowledge of their work; A Presentation, On Monday, March C, Mrs. Ridley Cooke,- of Marton, gave a very enjoyable farewell "at home" to Mrs. P. P. White, wife of the postmaster, who is leaving for Hamilton. During her residence in Marton, Mrs. White has made many iricuds, ' and a pleasing feature of the. afternoon was a presentation made to her of a solid silver vase and cake dish, as a token of their friendship. Among ■ those present were: Mesdames Beckett, Kitcat, ■ (Dr.) Scott, (Dr.) Warren, Sandford, Cox, E. Rawson, C. Rawson, Howard, F. Hatkerly, Jamicson, Sladden, D. Morrison, Ketherclift, aud Cameron; Misses Stcdniai), Hardy, Howard, M'Beth, and- Ccoke. Musical items .were given by Mesdames Kitcat, Sladdeu, Warren,. and Miss Hardy. At tho conclusion of the presentation, "For She's A Jolly Good Fellow" was sung, Mrs. Hatherly presiding at the piano. Mrs. White carries with her the good wishes of her many friends to her new home. The Maries. In reference to the proposed Coronation gift from the Maries of the Dominion to Queen Mary, tho Mayoress announces that the sum of ,£2l 2s. 7d. has been subscribed by 372 subscribers from all parts of the Dominion, outlying districts responding readily. A Woman Mountaineer. Some most unusual feats of mountaineering have recently been achieved by Miss Constance Barnicoat, who will be remembered by many people in both Wellington and Nelson. Whilo staying in Switzerland, at Christmas time, she ascended Great Schreckhorn (13,385 ft.), tho most difficult peak in Bernese Oberland. Especially difficult in winter, this very dangerous' ascent has very seldom been attempted at such a time in the year, and only once before has it been mado by a woman, and then it was in the summer. Miss Barnicoat had already gained some lame as a mountaineer by her difficult exploits among the Pyrenees, the Russian Caucasus, and the New Zealand Alps (last but not least).
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Field, sen., of Nelson, arrived back in New Zealand by c the Ituahino on Saturday, after .a trip s round tho world. They left Nelson in ( June, 190S, and travelled by Northern Australia, the Philippines, Chinn, Japan, and Hawaii to San Francisco. A lengthy stay was made in Southern California, and one winter was spent at Los Angeles. Mr. and Mrs. Field then travelled across the United States' to New York, and afterwards -went on to London. After spending somo time in the Ola Country they sailed.for the Cape, and made a stay of three months in South Africa, journeying through the different States of the IJnion. Thence they came on to Wellington, and on arrival left by the Main Trunk express for Auckland. The' following visitors to town are staying at tho Occidental Hotel:—Mr. and Mrs. Williamson (Kaituna West), Mrs. and Miss J. R. Macdonald (Levin), Mr. and Mrs. Nesbit (Dannevirke), Mr., Mrs., and the Masters M'Gregor (Wiiangarei), Mr. Guthrie, M.P., Mr. Graham, M.P., and the Misses Graham (Nelson), Mr. Horton (Blenheim), and Mrs. d'Arth. (Otaki). Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Reynolds are spending a week or ten days in Napier. Mrs. Matthews (Westport) is staying at the Hotel Windsor. . Mr. and Mrs. Liddell Kelly are spending a holiday in the Taranaki district. Mr. and Mrs. Dickie (Christchurch) are in town, and are staying at the Hotel Windsor. ' ■ Mr. and Mrs. Lindsay Buick (Dannevirke) are leaving this week on a visit to England. ■ .. On Sunday the death occurred at Longlands, Hawke's Bay, of Mrs. Emily Bridgm'an, the wife of Mr. W T . Bridgman, a well-known sheep farmer. The deceased lady, who was 30 years of age, was a daughter, of ' Mr. 11. Meredith, cx-M.P. for Ashley. •The death occurred yesterday at Goldiesbrae. of Mrs. Blacklock, relict of the late Mr. J. W. Blacklock. :Mr. David Reid, one of the Australian managers of the Orient S.S. Company, who, with Mrs. Kcid, has been touring the Dominion, left Auckland by the Moldavia for Sydney en Wednesday. *Mrs. H. Carlyle is a visitor to Napier. Mrs. Toogood (senior) and Mrs. A. Toogood, of Fcatherston, are in Wellington, and are staying at tho Hotel Windsor. ,Miss Hopper, matron of the Dannevirke Hospital, is staying in Napier. The Hon. George Fowlds and Mrs. Fbwlds, who have been staying at tho Hotel Windsor, left for the south last evening.• 'Miss Hesketh, Blenheim, is in Wellington, and is staying at the Hotel Windsor. LAn "at home" is being held at tho Arts Club this evening, at which the guests of honour will be Mr. Killick am Mr. Hackworth. A very enjoyable musica programme has been arranged, several well-known singers taking part in it.
