RITUALISM IN THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND.

On Sunday evening, in the Tabernacle, Crawford Street, Wellington, Pastor David Nield spoke on the work of the Ritualists in the Church of England. He stated that in tho early part, of 1333 the late J. H. Newman, along with E. H. iroude, went to Rome, and visited Mr. \\ ueman (who v/as . afterwards Cardinal Wiseman) to find out on what terms they could b.3 taken into the Roman Catholic Church. They returned to England, and within three months commenced the ritualistic movement in tho most secret manner. Newman wrote for several years in the fiercest manner against the Church of Rome. But when his strong language had served his purpose—thai of blinding the Protestant public to what was going en—Newman withdrew publicly everything he had written of that kind, and excused himself on the ground that "such views, are "necessary for. our position," Dr. Pusey wrote a most valuable historical refutation.of Auricular Confession. An abler refutation has never been published by any Protestant, and in after life Dr. Pusey himself was unable to answer. his . own arguments. But who would suppose that four years before he wrote those Notes on Auricular Confession, Pusey himself had commenced to- hear confessio-is himself? In these days there were uearly 2000 men in the. Protestant.Church of England who were doing Itoriie's work. It is proposed to continue discourses on the principles of the' Reformation and the lives of the Reformers, week by week.
