■ NOTES QN THE RACING. . IBy Tclegt-apt-Special Correenondent.l .. ■ i •■ Dannevirke, March 9. The Dannevirke meeting was concluded in fine but windy weather. The races ■were again greatly delayed, and it -was nearly G o'clock before people were able .to.-get away after the last, race, The ■ crack;horseman, A. Oliver, was in fine ' form, and rode two splendid finishes on Rangiatua and Floater. Speculation was very heavy, and a good profit should re-' suit over .tho meeting. The Feilding trainer, A; Attwood, started three horses in the Hack Hurdles, and ■ they finished in' the places after an interesting race over tho last half-mile. Burton again made play at the start,-but with a-mile gone all except Ranu and Ast'raea had winning chances. Then Waikarnka forged ahead, but was caught : by Waiputere when, approaching the last' fence. Te Whctu also put in a claim, arid the trio took off practically together. ' Waiputere's light weight stood to him in the run home, and he won by. half a ••length. However, he w-as 'subsequently- : disqualified for failing to weigh in cor--re'atly. His weight was eight pounds 6hort.. Marton was placed third. Ascalon and Tigerine were evenly backed in'the March Handicap, and it was qtiito interesting to observe the. way the money poured in' on both.' Ascalon (G. Jenkins) was a slightly better favourite at the close,- despite the fact that - V; Colleio, trainer of Tigerine, declared that his mare would be improved by tho gallop yesterday. Ouick and all as Ascalon is out of the barrier, he was no match for Tigerine, who soon had a three , lengths' break. At the turn Ascalon and Morec joined in, but the filly held her own in the run home, though Deeley was busy on her. at the finish. Only Avaunco and Jackpin were hacked with any spirit in the Telephone Handicap. ■ The fatter was first out, while • the filly-got badly "pocketed," and at one ■_■ time was giving Jackpin a ten lengths start.' Lirthe straight she came very .fast, .but could not reach Jackpin. Waitrike was on hand-the whole way, and is - coming on fast. Tnatahi was a bad last. Suffragetter bolted around before the start. Juiinn was a solid favourite in the Hack Welter event, but he only scrambled home by a head, after a good race. Slourton made the running till tho back stretch, when Merri Valet headed him, ■ but immediately gave fray to Kohupatiki. In the straight the favourite came along, and just got up in time. Queen of Scots also headed. Kohupatiki. The big handicap was a good betting Tace, several of the runners being "well -' 'supported. Fort William again pursued his'forcing tactics, but, at tho top of the •back stretch. Buchanan got him under : control. Llanwern and Teotano were now in.- charge, but acres* the bottom tho latter drew out, Te Puia and Irish Riilo "being l nearest him at the bend. Fort -William a*ain came on the scene, but ■ Teotane won very comfortably. To Puia was a neck in front of Irish Rifle, with Fort William next. Arirn, a well-backed candidate, got away badly, and whipped in the field the whole way. Tho Juvenile Handicap furnished the best finish of the day, and the (hreo placed horses dashed past the line locked together. Rangiatua got a break at the barrier, but was steadied, and Our Queen led Sinapis and Gold Bond to tho turn. The field swung out here, and Oliver, riding Rangiatua very hard, got up on tho rails. Our tjuoen was quickly disposed of, a'nd Rangiatua appeared to have the Tace won at tho distance, but Sinapis and Gold Bond finished very resolutely, and, 'when tho box was reached, there was nothing in it. Jt was a splendid finish, and had it not bpen for the others running so wide at the lurii, Rangiatua would rot havo Won. Floater and San Lass were the best supported horses in the Mangatera Hack Handicap, At the start Allurement, who went very scratchily in the preliminary, and Fond Memory, wero the leading division. They drew out right away from tho field, whiie the two favourites wero well back, Retting all the worst of matters. At the turn Allurement tired, and Fond Memory held such an advantage that- it seemed impossible for him to bo caught. However, onco again Oliver, on Floater,' got through oh tho rails, and, in a hard finish, he ranged up in tho last-couple of strides, and won by a neck. Fond Memory tired badly over the last bit. Oliver was cheered on returning to scale,

All twelve acceptors contested the concluding event. Six of the runners were well backed,.Tonnga (ridden by 11. Gray) being favourite. Captain Bell, on the outside, nas last to begin. Aimwell and Waipimui also began slowly. Hatch tried to get tho former through on tho rails but failed. Thetis was out in front at halfway, and was joined by The Rover entering the straight. Half-" ay down, Lethean and Peacemaker joined in, and a slashing finish resulted in favour of Lethean by a head, with The Rover a neck away. Lethean was just beaten for third place on tho previous day, and to-day he was allowed to pay a false price;
