COVER FIRING MATCH.
Distair.o, 200 yards; ten shots per man; magazines compulsory. ■ Every team was extended to five paces, each man lying behind a special cover -irovided for him. When tho men were under tlrs cover, the team commander ordered magazines to be charged, and when this was ready, informed the range officer, who blew ?. whistle to mark the commencement of tho competition, lhe target renrcsented a head and shoulders, painted khaki, and this was exposed at intervals varying from 5 to 10 seconds, eacli exnosnre being for 1 seconds at different places along the lino of butts, about 50 vards. The team ■all fired at the same target, each time it appeared. Each man watched from the edge of his cover, and on the annearance of the target fired one shot only. A point was deducted for each occasion on which any man unduly exposed himself, his head dress, or rifle, in watching for the target to appear, or in firing. Each hit on the target counted ono point. Tho prizes were won as under:— .£5, Napier Guards, 42 hits. £3, Wellington City Rifles, 38 hits. ■£i, Opaki Rifles. No. 1 team, andOpaki No. 2, 33 hits each, equal.
Rifleman Keadirson, the runner-up, is a comparatively new hand with the rifle. He paid his first visit to Trentham last year, when he put on 417 in the championship series and secured a piaco in the second fifty. He has only been shooting for threo or four years, his club performances being good,' but nothing exceptional.
Sergeant R. L. Frank, third manin at tho finish, who hails from Nelson, has put in six seasons' shooting at tho Trentham meeting, and has shot very consistently. For tho past four years he has been 1,1 the final fifty, and he has carried off a considerable number of prizes, including the Nelson' Match last year. Ho took first in the Empire Malch against the Australians :it the last meeting, and was also ill tho. Gordon Highlanders Match. During tho present season he has carried off tho Feilding and Taranpki Championships, and he also competed at the recent Grcytoun meeting, where he shot remarkably well, being looked upon as the winner of the District Championship right up to the finnl malch, at which he unaccountably collapsed. Sergt. Frank has held Hie championship of his club (Nelson Rifles) for the last four year. He is not competing for the club premiership this year as he has been away in Australia, where he shot well in a number of big malches, although ho did not win anything important.
SURPRISE SERVICE TARGET MATCH, In this match, in which the firing was at different distances between 1000 and 500 yards, three ur more targets, each consisting of six hVures at two yards' intervals, were placed at unknown distances, the order in which they appeared being varied. On a signal from the. tiring point, the first target was raised and exposed for '10 seconds, and then lowered. After about 20 seconds' delay, the second target was raised and kept lip for JO seconds. The samo procedure was followed with tho third target, after which the marker counted the hits, and then had things in readiness for tho next team. Each team comprised a commander and six men, and was taken to a point ( where it prepared to open fire as if in a defensive position. The commander had to keep a look out for the enemy, which represonted either advancing or" retiriw? skirmishers, infantry in column, or
cavalry dismounted. Each commander had to observe and correct his fire, points being added for skill in conducting firecontrol and handling tho men. THE RUNNING MAN. Tho Running Man Competition was reopened yesterday morning, a number of entrants'not having shot when the competition was closed down and the prizelist issued on Wednesday night. According to (he revised prize-list, Rifleman W. Randall, Linton, and Lieut. R. M. Irvine, Nelson, each secured 7 hits and 2 bull's-oves, and receive .£•! 10s. apiece. The winners of £1 18s.. with 7 hits and 1 bull's-eye, were each reduced to JGI 13s. ■Id., on account of the tie for first place, and Sergt. Ryder, was added to tho £\ prize-list. A number of revisions had to be made in the prize-list as far as it affected winners of less than £\.
