An official report on the stock and crop prospects states that though tho heavy ruius have caused considerable losses in (he potato and fruit crops, tho season has been the most prosperous for years, and the outlook for the winter is very bright.

THE YEAR'S STOCK. RETURNS. ' Sydney, March 9. The Chief Inspector of Stock estimates the number of horses in tho State at the end of last year at 529,685, an incrcaso of 12,392, as compared with tho previous year. The cattle are estimated at 1,694,183, an increase of. 47,883; _and tho sheep at 13,583,105, a decrease.of's9l,466. It is difficult to account for the decrease in sheep, as the lambing was on a par with that of the previous year.
