THE ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY. (TVora Oar Special Correspondents.) ■Palmerston, March 7. The annual meeting-of tho Palmerston Orchestral Society was held last evening. Mr. D. Buick, M.F. (patron) occupied tho chair. The balance-sheet disclosed assets to the amount of .£176 12s. Od., while there were no liabilities. The following officers wcro elected:—President, Mr. W. F. Dunvard; vice-presidents, Messrs. C. Smith, F. Grace, H. N. Cooke, I'. A. M'Hardy, J. L. Barnicoat, J. Bctt, and J.'J. Whitehead; conductor, Mr. M. Cohen; leader of orchestra, Mr. T.-. U. Kitchen; pianist, Miss Ganstad; holi. accompanist, Miss L. Croucher; property manager, Mr. W. A. Browning; librarian, Mr. N. Proctor; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. H. IC. Swallow; auditor, Mr. J. Mitchell; committee, Messrs. A. J. Graham, P. Larcombe, A. Tonkm, J. Jones, F. J. Litchfield. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the retiring officers. Tho first practice for the present season will bo held on Monday evening next. / Citizens' League Formed.
Mr. K. S. Abraham presided over a meeting of citizens last evening, when it was decided to form a Citizens' League, the principal object 'being to securo strong candidates for election to tho Borough Council next month. Mr. R. S. Abraham was elected president, and Mr. C. F. Spooner secretary. Messrs. A. Guy and TV. L. Fitzherbert were appointed a sub-committee to draw up rules, to 1:3 submitted to a meeting on Monday next, when a selection of candidates will bo made. A committee was set up to organise ' the ' league and canvass for members. • . Tho committee who (ire organising tho Fitzherbert East snorts, which are to ba held on March 22,"have appointed Major Dunk and Colonel l'ringle judges, and Lieutenant Smith time-keeper. A "social" is to be'held in the hall on the evening of tho day of tho sports. This Sports Club has now a membership of between 50 and 00.
Annual Band Meeting. Tho annual 'iieeting of thV'Palnierston Brass Band was hc-d last evening, Mr. V. Park (president) being in the chair. The report stated tliat, tuoush tho band had not greatly improved its financial position during tlio yeai, muck progress ■had been wade from a musical point of view. The balance-sheet showed that tho assets amounted to iCSUS 12s. 6d., aud liabilities to .£227 17s. 3d., leaving a surplus of £W 15s. 3d. The receipts for the year were:—.£32l Is. 10d., and tho expenditure .£29 i Is. lid., leaving a balance of .£29 18s. lid. The lollowsng odicers were elected: —Patron, Mr- D. Nathan, and Major Dunk; drum-major, Col.-Ser-geant Perrin; sergeant, Mr. AV, Bowatu; corporal, Air. H. Graham; lance-corporal, Mr. J. Beattie. Medals were presented as follows:—Most improved player dur-. ing tho past six months, Master Davey; best attendance, Messrs. C. Pike and H. Graham; smartest on all parades, Mr. C. Pike. For the ensuing year the Palmerston Rifles donated ,C 2 2s. to the funds, and medals have- been donated by Major Dunk, and Messrs. &. E. Clausen' J. Monnsey. W. Park, and V. J. Kalhau, for competition during the coming year.
Personal and General. Messrs. S. R. Lancaster and J. Slack, of Palmerston, left to-day for the Ohura show, where tho former will jud;;e the cattle and fheep, and tho latter the ni"The Ackautero (Fitzherbert East) School Committee are laying down an asphalt tennis court. Not only the school children, but also adult players will appreciate this.
A University scholarship (including .£SO nnd fr-?o tuition at Victoria College) has been won by Miss Louis Chapman, of c ! mer £ . iiiss Chapman is a graduate of the Palmerston High School. Donations towards the pageants which the Mayoress is arranging in aid of the Palraerston High School fun-is continue to come in, a further sum of .£3 6s. haviif been received. "

A branch of Hie Baptist Church Laymen's Mission has been formed in Pal-morsl-oii.
