Tho Hon. J. Carroll (Acting-Prime Minister), the Hon. G. Foivlds, tho Hon. T. Mackenzie, the Hon. D. Buddo, and the Hon. J. A. Millar returned to Wellington from Auckland by yesterday's Main Trunk train. The Hon. H. M'Kenzio is in Hiintly.

Mr. Goo. IT. Whitcombe, managing director for Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd., is about to leave- for England. He will bo absent in London for about thveo years.

Mr. John Stangcr, sen., an old settler of Rangitata, Canterbury, died there on Friday morning last, aged 8!) years. The deceased was born at Birssy, Orkney, N. 1!., and came to the colonies at the time of (he Victorian gold rush. ,

Mr. James Dare, jun., and Sir. .Tolm Maxwell, two young Thames residents, have been engaged- at JJIO per month each to act as underground managers of two mines in Central America.

Mr. AV. E. Caldow, •secretary of the Wellington Choral Society, is at present visiting Napier.

Mr. 11. M. Chisholm, managing director of tho Napier AVoollen Company, Ltd., is nt present in Wellington, on a business visit.

It is the intention of Dr. Bell, the retiring Director of the Geological Survey Department, to set up in a private mining practice in London. lie will have with him Mr. I'raser, mining geologist, one- of the principal members of his staff, and his secretary, Mr. P. Clarke, will also go with them 'to undertake tho secretarial work. Leaving by the Manuka on Friday, Dr. Bell spends about a month in New Caledonia, investigating- oil and mercury claims. .After retting up in London, the geologist will go for a time to Canada, in connection with mining work there. Dr. Bell expressed to a Dominion reporter ye.-lirday his regret at leaving New Zeahnd, where his work had boon so congenial, and his life very pleasant. It is only the inducement of higher remuneration that is taking him away.

Mr. Frank Thompson, general manager and secretary of the Christehurch Tramways Board," has been appointed by tho board as its representative on the Tramway Board of Appeal for Canterbury.— Press Association.

Mr. Angus N. Poison, assistant private secretary to tho Minister for Public AVorks, has received notification iof his election as a Fellow of the National Shorthand Association ci' Great Britain.

Mr. James Trevor, (he well-known contractor, has practically retired from business. The business formerly carried ;'ii under tho title of Jas. Trevor and Sons now bears the name of Trevor Bros., Ltd. The firm is now engaged upon the erection of the. brick addition to the Girls' College.

Mr. V. Millar, of Karnri, who under went a surgical operation on Friday last is making satisfactory progress toward: recovery, and it is expected that he wil be convalescent in about a fortnight.

Much regret is expressed here (says our Palmerston correspondent) at the death of Mr. G. C. AVheelcr, of Jlnlcombo, who had many friends in the Manawatu district. ■As an ex-prosidont. and a present member of the Manawatu A. and P. Association, deceased was well known to Palmerston people, and Ins services in the interests of the association were greatly appreciated. The association has arranged to send a wreath, and it will also bo represented by a large number of tho committee at the funeral on Thursday. Tho New Zealand Breeders' Association, which only a few days ago made. Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler a very valuable presentation in appreciation of Mr. Wheeler's services to that society, will also send a wreath, and bo represented at the funeral. v
