NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[By Glencoe.l C. Emerson was offered the mount on no fewer than five, of the listed starters in (ho Dnnnsvirkc Cup, but had to decline as lie had previously been engaged for Llanwern. Saiidstrram has been withdrawn from the Danncvirko Cup. The question of bringing tho totalizator arrangements more up to date, in order to cope with the increased rush of business, consequent upon the absence of tho bookmakers, has been agitating the minds of (ho Auckland Committee for some time past. Last evening tho manager Mr. 11. H. Hayr) left on a visit to Brisbane to view the working of the ekctrio totalisator there, with a view to tho possible installation of that class of machine at Ellcrslic. The crack Australian hurdle ridtr, J. Chcvally, who was suspended somo tima back for alleged suspicious practices, has again been granted a license by tha Secretary A. E. Whyte, of tho Wellington Racing Club, is at present on a holiday visit to Dunedin. He returns homo on -Wednesday morning. Stipendiary Steward A. Yowlcs recentlyreported adversely oh the running of Lord Kelvin in the Truganiui Handicap at the Williamstown meeting, and tho result was that tho rider—an apprentice named Hefferman—was reprimanded. Tho owner, Mr. M. Melrose, took the case, before the stewards a second time, and produced veterinary evidence to show that the horse was not himself, and could not do better. The explanation, as far aa the owner and trainer were concerned, was accepted. Royal Fleet, who won the Hurdle Raca at Flemingtou on Saturday, is owned by that astute gentleman Mr. E. A. Connolly, .who has the solo right of training on tho Aspendalc course. Royal Fleet must bo a fairly smart horse, as ho recently won a welter at Mooneo Valley. He is by The Admiral's 'irothcr, Fleet Admiral, from Indolence, by Invermay, from Wanda, by Grandmaster, and waa bred in New South 'Wales by Mr.. J. J. M'Grath. Tho New Zealand horseman, J. N. M'Gregor, generally rides Connolly's jumpers, and it is, therefore, more than probable that he had the winning mount on Saturday. Mr. E.'J. lYatt went home from Wangav nui yesterday. He informed otir correspondent, that his horses would not.be seen out at Dannevirke. This means that the numbers of Parable, Cheddar, Winning Post, and Esmeh will appear on tho scratching board. ■ On the return journey from Wanganui Trainer J. H. Prosser went through to .Woodville, and camo down via Wairarapa, probably to look at an Achilles youngster. Ovation (full brother to Provocation and Co.) will make his first appearance at Dannevirke on Wednesday; R. Hatchwill ride him. .1. Farmer thinks that the colt is not much at present, but will bo useful later. It is quite probable that C. Jenkins will go across to Sydney at Easter to ride Lady Medallist in her engagements. It is ten years since Jenkins last visited Australia to ride Advance at Flemingtou and Randwick. Tho West Coast contingent which went through to Dannevirke yesterday consisted of To Tuia, Lethean, and Silva. Astraea, Rose'ake, Ambergris, St. Toncy, mid Jackpin are, therefore, improbable starters. Tho opinion is current that Avaunco, who formerly raced in the same ownership as St. Toney, will be among tho starters at Dannevirke. At Trcntham J. Lowo has several additions to his team, including a nice shapely colt by Obligado, which looks as if ho will gallop like the rest of this sire's progeny, and Miss Murphy, a filly by Maliaki, which scored recently at tha Poverty Bay meeting.Paisano and Continuance aro not nowlikely to visit Australia this year, but To Arai will bo dispatched, and W. Young will go across to rido him. . On Nelson form, Astonishment, who has incurred a penalty, and Finola can have no chance at Dannevirke. Neither has arrived there yet. C. Pritchard's pair, Penza and Eangikapua, have been withdrawn from all their Dannevirke engagements. Winners at Woodville, Wauganui, and Nelson since tho declaration ol weights havo incurred the following penalties at Dannevirke-.—Hurdles: To Wuetu (171b.) list. 2lb. Makirikiri Hack Handicap: San Lass (51b.), Dst. 51b.; Winning Post (101b.), 9st. 51b.; Astonishment (101b.), 7st. alb. Cup: Merrivonii) iSib.), Dst. 41b.; Tho Rover (10lb.), 7st. Jib. Electric Handicap: Jackpin UOlb.), Sst. 121b. Tamaki Welter: Aiimvcll (lGtb.), 9st. 21b.; Julian (101b.), Sst. 101b. Tho Stratford trainer, Ben Nicholls, telegraphed yesterday withdrawing Starboard and Tho Mystery fron their Dannevirke engagements. Me.-rivonia was taken back to Trcntham from Wanganui, and, is, therefore, unlikely to bo seen out at Dannevirke. At AVanganui Mr. E. J, Watt purchased privatclv the yearling full-brother to Somte. The youngster went through to Hastings yesterday. Messrs. J. and F. Armstrong will bo among those present at tho Dannevirke mooting, but their colours are not likely to be seen on the track there. Mr. James Spiers Freeman, secretary of the Dannevirke Club, is now ablo lo get about after his recent illness, and will be present on both days at Tamaki. 11l the list of acceptors for tho Nursery Handicap at the Dannevirke fixturo a couple of the youngsters were unnamed Tho Tristram colt should be "Mr. Lance Wood's" Abcrcoid, by Sir Dove— Floradora, trained by W. Davis at Treutham. The Ambrose filly should bo Mr. W. J. Douglas's St. Bryde by St. Ambroso —Waingougoro. Trainer A. Nealo missed tho accept-, ance with Rangiatua for the first day, but is at Dannevirke for the second day, telegraphs our correspondent. Tuatahi is out of the Makirikiri Handicap. Sinapis is favourite for the Nursery Handicap. Makara was b"ing brought through -for tho meeting from Woodville, but C. Milieu's lease expired yesterday morning, and tho owner came through, took y isscssion of the horse, and went-homo to Hawera.
