Light showers fell at intervals on Saturday, but they wero not enough to affect Hiu going, or tho attendance, which aD-

pcared to bo up to the mark. Tho Jackson Stakes excited great' interest, and was no doubt won by tho best horse, though, at the turn, it looted as if Pcirene would defeat her stable, companion owing to tho confidence of tho rider of Vice-Admiral. R. J. Mason thought that the two-year-old would win, so perhaps she did not show her best form. In tho Wanganui Stakes, Jenkins out-pointed tho other riders, who allowed him to mako his own paco throughout. This suited the top-woight to a nicety, and, at the finish, sho beat her opponents in tho sprint home.

Thcro was a long delay at the start of tho Autumn Handicap, and the starter had great difficulty in getting tho field straightened. Half tho horses caught the tapes when they went up, and it was some time before they became, disentangled. Humming Bird was out by herself at the end of two furlongs, and was not caught again, despite tlio hard riding of St. Felix. North East was a poor third, but he had all the worst of tho start, and, for nearly a furlong, his rider was endeavouring to get clear .of tho tapes. Rill again ran much below her best form. The Matarawa Hack race was an exciting contest, and produced a fine finish. Tho favourite, Piriwai, whipped round when the barrier was released, and lost several lengths. Winning Post was soon in front, but Taft led past tho half-milo from Jackpin and Con the Shaughraun. The latter was knocked back, and Deploy took his place Jackpin was first into tho straight, and, though challenged by Con. the Shaughraun, he lasted, long enough to win by a neck. Winning Post was a poor third, and Deploy, who is not showing her usual brilliancy, was next. 'The Greenwood bracket (Vice-Admiral and Pcirene) was more favoured than Madam Madcap in tho Jackson Stakes. 'Into Shot delayed tho start, but tho quintet moved off in a line True Shot soon had a three-lengths' break from' Bronze, with the bracketed pair next. Across tho bottom, Vice-Admiral ran up to tho leader, and Peireno did likewise. Tito pair were first into the straight, and, in the run home, Vice-Admiral could havo como further away, but Gray was content to win by a head. Truo Shot was two lengths further back, with Bronze and Madam Madcap beaten off. The lattev seemed thoroughly soured, and gave the impression that the I'lying Handicap on Thursday had taken too much out of her. The winner is a greatly improved colt, and should beat the two-year-olds in tho Challenge Stakes at Riccarton.

There were no fcratchings in. tho Fordell Hurdles, for which Maidi, 'Xavicr, and Playmate were backed in that order. The first to move was Playmate, who was joined by Hydrant at the first fence. Passing tho. stand, Waikaraka led Hydrant and Goldbird, but, at tho sixfurlong post, he was done with, and Hydrant led from Playmate. At the last fence, the latter joined issue, but, in landing, ho broke his fetlock, leaving Hydrant to ran 1 homo an easy winner from Maidi. Playmate was subsequently treated by a veterinary surgeon, and will be left at Wanganui for some time.

Ribstono Piopon again scored, a win in the Hack Hurdles, but, as on (he first day, he was very wcJI tested. Mnhut.t, not nearly ready, ran well until tho last furlong, when ho tired badly. Astraea jumped badly, but her pace got her into third place. Minura ran off, and Euroco and AVaitanu finished a long way in the rear. The winner was purchased by Mr. J. E. M'Donald, and goes into tho Porirua stable.

That good marc, Lady Medallist, scored! a very popular win in the Stakes, after being in command practically throughout. The exception was from the half-mile to ■tho turn for home, where Te Puia headed her, but, in tho straight, tho St. Alwynne mare came away, and won comfortably from To Puia, with Miss Mischief third, and the others a long way back. The winner was greeted with a great burst .of cheering as Jenkins brought her bacß. to weigh in. Thore is little doubt, that, sho is better than ever, and, after - the race, she was not in the least distressed. Miss Mischief ran r. good honest race, but the weight hampered her. . Mendip, ras usual, failed to run well on the 'second day. Kopu, who was ridden by W. Price in/ place of T. O'Brien, failed to make any showing, and ''Gob'div'lh ''Park? ivHcj again came" in' for'considerable"support, was toiling in tho rear tho whole way.

There were no scratchings in the Harrison Hack' Handicap, and- heavy specula'-, tion was indulged in on several of tho candidates. The fact of Gray riding Mallet and Jenkins being substituted for "Campbell on Brown Trout caused this pair to command most support. Meroze was another candidato which carried mora money than yesterday, while Laius, the second favourite yesterday, receded badly in tho betting. It, was the finest ■raco' of tho meeting;, and the whole field at different stages were prominent. Passing the stand several horses were being ridden for positions. Down tho back Mallet was tailed off. but the others woro all bunched. At tho four-furlong post Mallet had joined tho field, which was led by Merozo and- Leolanter, and whipped in by Laius. Across the bottom the latter moved un, and, shortly after this, Mallet put in a run, but, in getting through, ho collided with Taft, who was dropping back. Laius appeared to have tho measure of Meroze In the straight, but the latter finished strongly, and Laius. was cut out of second money by 'Mallet, who was unlucky not to win. True Shot, who had started in the Jackson Stakes, and St.. Toncy, about whose ownership there was some trouble, were scratched'in the Farewell Handicap, leaving three runners. Boanerges' /was a better favourite than St. Bill and Lady Moufcoa, but thero was' not so much

in it as was expected. St. Bill'began very fast, and led- Lady . Moutoa and Boanerges. The latter joined the pair across the bottom, but Oliver kept the favourite in behindhand relied on getting a run' on the. rails. In this he was disappointed, and, in the opinion of many, it lost him. the race. St. Bill and Lady Moutoa crossed the line locked together, and the former got the verdict by a nose. WINNING OWNERS.
