PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. A RECORD LOWERED, The combined swimming carnival of tho Wellington and Y.M.C.A. Amateur Swimming Clubs was hold at tho To Aro Batha on Saturday afternoon. The atteudanca was not very large, but Ilia events were interesting. The schoolboys' championshij for the Dutliio Cup was a viry exciting race, and tho winners (Clyde Quay School) were loudly applauded. This school has won the cup ever sinco tho time of its donation six years ago. The 440 Yards Wellington Provincial Championship, in which a great deal of interest was taken, was won by P. C. Froyberg, who defeated tho present holder, R. llcaly. Frcybrcg, in winning, lowered Healy's time by 12sec., and received cheers as ho came out of tho water. An exceedingly amusing event was tho bun fight, which was won by Gallagher, with Gosling second. The buns were tiol to strings, which were suspended from a rope across tho baths, and tho competitors had to detach tho buns with their teeth. To watch them struggling and straining their necks to reach tho dangling things wns, of course, a diverting sncctacle. During the final of tho Junior Handicap race one of the competitors took eramn while in the water, but was quickly fished out by a brother swimmer. The officials for the carnival wore:— Referee, Hon. 100 Yards Provincial C. S. Price, 1;' B. C. Freyberg, 2. By winning this event Price defeats the present holder, Freyberg, but does not lower his record time, G3l-sscc. The time for the race was G4 l-ssee. 3lr. P. Hanna figured in the modern "lianco" exhibition, much to the delight of tho- onloukers. He was handcuffed, and then tied in a sack and thrown into the water. In about lOsec. ho was free, COLLEGE CARNIVAL. The Victoria. College Club held its first annual carnival at the Wellington Col-: lego Baths on Saturday afternoon, and, despite tho rather' drear weather conditions, there was a fair attendance of spectators. All tho events wcro well contested, especially the finals, most of which, were won by the narrowest of margins. Members of the club turned out in full force, large fields being the order of the day. Owing to the accommodation foi the. competitors being limited, no interclub races were included in (ho pro« gramme. An excellent exhibition of tho Schacfer method of life-saving, which was provided by Messrs. A. W. Smith and 11. W. Kirkwood, of tho Thorudou Club, proved both interesting and instructive, and won from the spectators hearty applause. The comic element was well brought out in the cigarette and umbrella race, and the hobble-skirt race, both of which were introduced into Wellington for tho first time. The carnival was successful in every respect, and reflects great credit on the committee. Tho following arc the results:— 50yds. Handicap—Ross. 1; Young, 2. Also started: Dean. Ward, and Thomson.
