TWO.TELL-TALE TARGETS. MARENZI AND THE WIND/ . 'Marenzi's targets tell a tale. At' 5(10 .yards, : during tho progress of the ing Match, ho lay down, and rattled off a seven-shot possible, fivo of lm shots being "centrals" within a fourinch circle, in the centre of the bull'seye, -and two bulls right through. He maintained the same elevation (two do--i grees below his normal of 25) and tho saino allowance for wind (five degrees right). Then ".Marcnzi went over to I finish'at GOO. yards, and, with seven shots made 26 out of a possible 35! His elevation was good, being two degrees below his normal of 3-1 for that range, and'this he did not vary. But tho wind bothered him dreadfully. : Ho started off with an" allowance of five degrees .right, got two bulls with that deflection, and then tlie wind changed, and ho fired dead in—a four —ho "was not far enough over. He gave three left for the next shot, and the next—, two more fours. So ho Ivent right over to seven degrees left and missed! Back he came to five degrees right, and plugged the inner—four points. Truly it was a vile wind. ,

STRAY SHOTS,

Challenges of tho marking in tho trenchos during yesterday's shootinrr totalled GO. Of these only 20 woro = sustained, the other '10 challengers forfeiting their half-crown deposit. A farewell message from the Trentham camp was dispatched to the l'rimo Minister yesterday morning by Colonel

Hughes, acting commandant of the camp. The message mentioned the fact that the annual meeting of tlio -Rillc Association had opened successfully with a record attendance of riflemen. The following reply was received from Sir Joseph Ward:—'/ Very pleiised to learn that number entries rillo meeting constitutes a record, nnd to know that everything is working smoothly. I am very sony indeed that it will not be possible l'or me to pay the camp a visit before leaving. Lady Ward and I very much appreciate your kind farewell message." The aperture nose, was already obtruding itself on the ranges yesterday afternoon. Alan after man rose from the mounds with his nasal organ disfigured as a result of its being too closely attached to tlio popular sight. The enterprising kinematographer who has established a picture show in

the middle of canvastown is reaping the roward of his enterprise. Seme of the more nervous shootists profess a fear of tlio. "moving picture" eye, but others scoff at the idea. Operations will be commenced this morning on '-'Running Rube," or what is officially designated tlio running man.

A. Wonderful Shoot,

Bombardier Ching, of the Royal Xew Zealand Artillery, Lyttelton, rattled on seven "centrals"—seven shots at 200 yards; within a' 4-incli invisible disc in tho centre of the bull's-eye. . The official test of a"riHo at the royal arsenals is. a standard'of seven -'-centrals" in the 4-inch disc at 100 yards range, and that with-the rifle automatically vised ill" a steel .'grip. Cliing did the same thing from 200 yards, a wonderful shoot;. . •
