GAS NEGOTIATIONS IN ONSLOW,
Ratepayers of IChandallah' gathered in foreo nt tho meeting held to' discuss tho Gas Company's proposals to supply gas to tho Onslow Borough. The chair was occupied by Mr. I'. Bourke. At the instance of the chairman, Councillor Stafford gave an outline of tho negotiations which havo extended over tho past six months, and tho terms asked by the Gas Company. Councillors Plimmer, Darvall, Bownen, Aplin, and Ferguson also spoke.' After a lengthy discussion, in'which tho merits of gas and electricity wero dealt with, also the terras asked by tho Gas Company, Mr. H. Kirkcaldio moved "That this meeting is of opinion that it is in the interests of tho district that tho Onslow Borough Council should accept the terms upon which tho Gas Company will supply the borough with gas, aud that tho councillors ol' tho IChandallah Ward bo requested to use every effort to immediately conclude a contract with tho Gas Company upon tho terms offered by tho. company." . The motion was seconded by Mr. Bates. Replying to a question, tho chairman said tlio offect of the motion if carried would not bo binding on tho ratepayers, but it would no doubt havo tlio effect of causing councillors to reopen tho question. After a lengthy discussion on tlio motion, tho following amendment was moved by Mr. l'V Holdswortli'"That at-tho same time this meeting asks tho councillors to approach the Wellington City Corporation with regard to tho continuance of the supply of electric light." Mr. Turner seconded the amendment, which was carricd with ease. A further motion that a housc-10-houso canvass ol tho district be mado was also agreed to.
