EDUCATION BOARD.

THE MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Education Board was held yesterday afternoon, Mr. Hubert Lea occupying the chair. There wore also present: Messrs. A. \Y. Hogg, M.1 , ., W. Allan, ,T. Elder, A. 11. On the recommendation of Hie AVorks [ and Finance Committee, it was decided to renew application to the Department fur grants for additional accommodation at AVorser liay. and improvements to the ■ residence at Kohinni. The following - works were declined:—Special allowance • ,£(i!i South Wellington; claim for medical t attendance £2 2s. Brooklyn; gas into resi- . deuce, (ireytown, and ari)>lk-:itiou far i separate building for use of cadets, l'ctone l West. Authority was given for the cost ; of labour for the construction of a shed < at Gladstone, half cost of renewal of i ittings Te Aro, cupboard for cadet rel quisites, Hiitt; drainage, etc., Dalofield; I repairs, Kcnini; and repairs to school, ■ Mungaroa. ! The clerk of works was instructed to ■ report on the application for repairs, etc., 1 4 at Mount Cook School. An application for a residence at AVatcrfalls was referred to the inspectors for a report. The tender of Mr. A. Napier, for ten years, from March 1, was accepted for Section 17, Block Y. Puhetoi. High I of occupation of Section 1(1. Block XA 7 [. Mount Cerberus, for saven years, from March 1, with clearing, grassing, and fencing conditions,, was granted to Mr. Roland Hayes. The Levin Auctioneering Company is to bo asked to vacate Sections 3 and 4 about the end of the present month. The following_ library subsidies were granted:—Kirori, Mo; Lansdoiviie, ,ti 105..; Kohinni, X'- 10s.; Longbusli, 12s. fid. ■ It was resolved that application should be 'made for a grant for the introduction of gas into the old school at Groytown, for cookery and science. It was decide! that the board adhere to its former decision to remove the existing school at Eketahuna to tho new site. Leave wns granted to remove the residence at Ngature, the fencing and ground to be left in good order.. The tender of D. It. Mills for fencing at AVaihoanga was accepted. It was decided that an allowance of £~5 per annum be made to the trust officer to cover all charges of even- kind, on condition that he provides and maintains a motor-bicycle of approved make. CLASSES FOR TEACHERS. A report was received from the inspectors as under:—"We recommend the board to establish the following classes for teachers, pupil teachers, and probationers :— At Training College, AVellington. Drawing and handwork—Probationers: Thursday, 1.30 p.m. to 3.311 p.m. Teachers and pupil teachers: Saturday, 9.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m.. Miss Lee, instructor. Singing—All teachers, Saturday, 11.45 a.m. to 12.45 p.m. —a course of 12 lessons by Mr. R. Parker. Domestic economy and cookery—Teachers, etc., Saturday,' 9.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. Miss Macintosh instructor. Cardboard modelling and woodworkTeachers, etc., Saturday, 9.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. Miss Howe instructor. Masterton High School. Drawing and handwork—Fupil teachers and probationers, Saturday, 9.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. Mr. Grant instructor. Singing—That Mr. Parker continue his singing class at Masterton during the latter part of the year. AVe also recommend that a class bo established _ for the purpose of training teachers in practical work in science; 30 lessons of at least two hours each to be given. That Mr. Stuckcy, M.A., be appointed instructor at a remuneration of .£25 to be paid from the Department's grant for the instruction of teachers. AVc also recomnjpnd that a class l>? established for the'purpose of training teachers in practical work in physiology or another branch of domestic science; 30 lessons of at least two hours each to be given; that the remuneration for the instructor be ■£23 to be paid out of the Department's ir-'int; that the instructor be appointed later. AVo n.l?o recommend that the school of instruction in agriculture, postponed from January 1911, bo lield at Greytown from May 29 to June !) inclusive. COOKERY CLASSES. The inspectors recommend that for a payment of 'I*, (such payment to be optional and not coninu.lsory) towards the costs of material; all girls attending the classes for instruction in c"ol;ery be allowed to take horn? the products of their work, and be supplied with the copy of a~hook of recipies. In eases whore such payment is not made it was recommended that o. recipe book be supplied at a cost of, sav, 3d.

ADDITIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS. The board found that through refusals and rclinnuishmeiits it was in a position to offer the following additional senior scholarships to which, have been awarded as under:—Arthur L. Thompson. Masterion; Ernest \V. Lee, Frank E. Dornwell. Sydney It. Eilis, Boy Harris, all of Boys' College; Theodora Pope, Girls' College; Herbert G. Kemp, Boys' College.

"SUGGESTIONS TO TEACHERS." . 1 It' was also recommended by the insnecl'or that the revised edition. of the English eo'lo with the latest revised edition of "Suggestions for the Consideration nf Teachers" be supplied to all schools. MEETING DATES. The Ne«" Zealand Educational Institute wrote suggesting that all boards meet the same week—the second of the month. The chairman did not think it would make much difference to the board if the suggestion was agreed to. Mr. Hogg thought the scheme was $uite impracticable. On the motion of Mr. Aitken the matter was referred to the Finance Commit- . FINANCE. Dealing with the finances of the board lite chairman said there was a small debit, balance of .KB? Is. -Id. as against a credit of about the same amount last month. This little variation was incidental tu the time of receiving and paying out money. The statement was quite satisfactory. Since the last, meeting ,£tl2 18s. -Id. had been paid out to pupil teachers and probationers as salarv.
