SATURDAY'S DELUGE.

DAMAGE AT KARORI. "It will cost about JJ150," stated the Karori Bsrough engineer last evening, in answer to a,question by a councillor as to what would bo the probable outlay to the council in repairing the damage to tho embankment beyond the Knrori Koad caused by last Saturday's rain. I'ully half the road, on the west eido of the deviation, on the city boundary, has been washed away. The real cause of the wash-out was the fact that a 15inch culvert near Bell's Quarry had been blocked, and had deviated the storm water en to tho roadway. The water hud found its way into tho trench of tho newly-laid feeder cable, and bad then began to wash away the embankment. Thousands of tons of debris had been carried into the bed of the stream below. About GO workmen aro at present onRaged (28 of whom aro employed by tho Karori Council) in repairing the daniago, the remainder being employed by tho City Council in renairing their portion. The spoil is being "taken, from th'e largo bum, on the Karori side of tho deviation. It is being utilised to widen the road, and to form a channel for carrying off storm water to protect the filling against similar accidents in the future. A portion of tho tram rails will have to be rclaid, and raised "for a distance of about 90 yards. Jt is expected that Hie work will be completed in about a week. At present a. car comes down from Karori every twenty minutes, and connects with tho car from town. During Saturday night a slip also took place in Burrow's cutting, und fell on tho new tram line, and another occurred in the quarry, bringing down cboiifc 700 cubic yards of debris, which will delay quarrying work for some ten or twelve days.
