"BRITAIN'S ONLY BATTLE."
ANNIVERSARY. YESTERDAY,
Yesterday was the eleventh anniversary of what Continental military writers are fond of referring to as "Britain's only battle." This was the eight or nine days' conflict which is comprehensively entitled the battle of Pieters Hill. ' It is the only English battk, since the intToduetion of breech-loadinjj rifles, which is referred to in Continental text books as something.in the nature of.a model and, certainly,'it surpasses all other battles in South ■Africa as an eshibition of combined tactics, and^also-as being peculiarly illustrative of, the pet Continental theory of "covering rifle fire." In this case the assault on the heart of the position was coveredby the unaimcd"(but not.undirected) fire of 8000 British on tho other side of the river. . . , , .:" { ■'.-.,
/The Continental analysts (especially the Gorman General Staff) criticise all other actions severely, but, in regard to Piefcers' Hill, all seem to agree that Buller fought on notion which, from every point of view, was well-nigh perfect. .'• :-.i . :
