The private letter-boxes for the now post offices at Wellington and Auckland arc estimated to cost about .£3IOO. Yesterday Cabinet authorised the expenditure of this sum for tho work. From the above figures some idea ca nbc sained of the number of boxes that will be provided.
Councillor liobcrl- Fletcher has ■ given notice.of bis intention to more a motion rescindiug the one- passed at the last mooting of the City Council approving tho principle of advertising on the tramcars. Councillor Fletcher has all along opposed the disfigurement of street cars with advertisements, and would have joined those in opposition to tho idea if ho had been present. Ho was then in Auckland, but so strong did he feel over the matter that he mado known which way he would voto.by telegraph to the chairman. As there is now no other way out of it, ho intends to ask the council to rescind its action of last week. The motion Sir. Fletcher proposes to rescind reads as follows:—"That considering that nearly .£2OOO a year can be made out of letting spaces in traincars for advertising, the right to place neat and suitable advertisements in tho cars, bo Bold or .let; that tenders be invited for advertising in the cars, and samples of the prepaid advertisements to be placed in the cars to be supplied." -.-.•>'
The Government has purchased, a section on tho corner of Tinakori Road anil Park Street, fronting the Thorndon bowling green, for a branch post office. Telegrams will b3 dispatched direct' from there, and money "orders and Savings Bank business will also be transacted. Alterations are also to bo carried out at tho Molesworth Street Post Offico. On behalf of the Executive Committee, tho local hon. secretary of tho Navy Leaguo recently sent a letter to Admiral Sir, William Kennedy, welcoming him to Wellington. The Admiral, in his reply, wishing the league every success, expresses his thanks for the "interesting details" contained in ..the.-league's.annual report, and says: "It is most satisfactory to near what good the league-is doing, and how kotm tho lads and lasses are about' the navy; for it would bo a bad 'day for Now Zealand if ever our navy was beaten. Messrs.. Turnbull and Jones, Ltd., electrical engineers, o! Wellington, have been entrusted with tho contract for a complete electric lighting and pumping scheme for the Taihape Borough Council. Tho power*, .will be obtained from tho •Ilautapu River by means of two turbines of 300 horse-power each, and after being converted into electrical energy will bo transmitted by overhead lines to tho centre of tho town, and also to a , pumping station in the upper reaches of the river ■ whence the town's vattr will bo pumped to a large reservoir, estimated to hold inoro than a month's supply.

Tho following is the text of the address presented to Air. A..E. Pollock,, stationmastcr at Thorndon (and now transferred to Hastings), by the e:-Manawatu l?ailway Company's employees.—,'"i'o A.' E. Pollock, Esq.—On the eve of your departure, from Thorndon to Hastings on transfer, we, the undersigned, ox-members of tho late Manawatu Railway Company's service, desire to express to you our sincere regret at your departure from our midst.' Tho deep and enthusiastic interest you have always shown in connection with any movement which had for its object tho betterment of the lot of tho railway employees will always be remembered by us with feelings of gratitude. Wo but express tho thoughts of all thoso who camo in contact with you, during your long connection with the service. Whou we say that, wo trust that you will bo spared for many years to enjoy renewed health and happiness. Trusting that you and yours mSy prosper exceedingly is the sincere wish of yours, sincerely." (Here follow the signatures.) Tho address is artistically i designed, mounted, and bound in book form ,by Mr. A. Cassie, of the Wellington goods staff. On tho front, page, on which the namo of the recipient is embossed in gold, aro two railway views in water colour. Tho top view represents an express train ascending an. incline, and the lower a country station, ond tho whole surmounted by .1 nold border, the pages on which the address is written disclose a pillar and floral design. The address is bound in green plush, making a very beautiful trophy. Mr.- Pollock leaves' for Hastings on Thursday next to take up his duties at that station.
