j . THE•LIGHTING' SCHEME. -/ ' In committee the Onslow Boiough' Council last,night reconsidered the. Gas Company's proposal 1 , for ' the supply of gas within the borujigh. . The Deputy-Mayor (Mr. Lynno ierg) presided. ■ ■■;, . The was:— ; "That ihe : Onslow Borough' Council, ' enter, into, a contract with the /Wei■.v linston .'Gas Company ; for .' the' term,».- . and on the conditions already agreed-/ to by the council, and" on the fur-' ; ther conditions:— "(1) That tho council take thirty ; street lights—six on the mains being . laid down in the streets agreed to be reticulated by the company, and- the balance within. fivo years frota the' date of inch mains being laid down; • such lights to be placed-in-such pc?i-- : . tions in the streets to be reticulated as the council may direct. "(2) After eleven of the twenty-one • years' terms have expired, the borough ' council is not-to require a'ny further public lights to' bo crectcd unless it . agrees to take any such' further public lights'" for a further ten years from ■ their erection. "(3) The council to have the right to take the gas for the supply of street • lights per meter, on the fame terms' as tho Johnsouville Town Board,"ex-, cept that tbe price per 1000 cubic feet, ' shall 1)3 agreed upon by the council and the company. "(1) The twenty-one years'-term shall , commence at a date six months from, the date of the execution'of'the con- * ; traot betwreh "the Borough Council and the company." . , ' It was moved by Councillor Plimmer, and;seconded by Councillor/Bowden,'that, clauses 1 arid 3 be adopted." As' an amendment, Councillor Stafford moved, ntid Cottncillov i'ergusoh seconded, that clause s and clause i be also adopted. The amendment was lost, the voting ■being ns'"follows:—For the amendment: Councillor Eerguson,. Stafford, and Banpister. Against: Councillors Bowden, Da'rvill.Aplin, and riimmer. . : :/ / . The effect of the voting is that the proposal is practically thrown out. i .:,// ■ The Deputy-Mayor expressed his 'sym-pathy-with' the amendment,-'but refrained from voting, as it would have left him tin .the position of; having to give a casting vote, and he. stated that he-did not caro to take the ; responsibility of so deciding,such an important question.
