The names of Mr. Staniforth Smith's ■ party, missing in Papua, are:—Messrs. • Bell (Chief Inspector of Native Affairs), ' Pratt (surveyor), Beaver (magistrate, at Driru), Ryan (Mr.' Beaver's assistant), Massey (of Thursday Island), in charge of the launcb.and Baker (engineer on tho launch). - ' •.-■■.' '■■ The Rev. Mr. Butcher, of Papua, who is visiting Sydney, thinks that probably J tho party was caught in a tidal boro on 5 the river. The bores are up to ten feet ] high at this time of the. year, and very 1 dangerous. He says it is unlikely : Mr. £ Smith and his companions were over- 5 whelmed by natives, although.the country £ is inhabited by cannibals. ' • «
