WAINUI MAIN DUPLICATION.

r ———• — ; . .TENDER OF;J. DT7TIIIE AND CO. . ACCEPTED. . Yesterday, at a special meeting, tho City' Council accepted tbe tender of Messrs. J. Dutliie and Co., for the supply of water-pipes required in connection with..tho .duplication, of, .the AVainui ,main.'!. ..ii.q *c h'niW* : Interviewed, Messrs." J. Duthio and Co., Ltd., stated that the City Counpil had - a very sound rule, not .to disclose prices until the contract was signed, but they might say that their-tender was under £50,000. The makers of tho pipes to be supplied were the Stanton iron Foundry, of Nottingham .(England),' whose pipes they had often supplied on various contracts thrpughout iVew Zealand; as well as to the city corporation, and, at present, to Miramar. The. pipes were exceptionally heavy, to meet the Wainui pressure, and were, by specifications, to be shipped with hoops shrunk oil to the faucet end, to avoid breakage.. "A feature of the.contract was' that the sum of £6000 was to be paid in the shape of Customs duty. It''did seem monstrous that the community shoulu bo so heavily mulcted in tho matter of expenditure for supplying water, one of the first necessities of life. To so get revenue by an immediate tax on a local body's loan money seemed unfair.
