March I—Wellington v. Y.M.C.A. B Grade. ■ ' February 18—Swifts v.. Wellington. v rebruary 25—Thorndon v. winner of above match. • „ New Zealand Championships,—Third Day. For tho concluding day of the" championship meeting tho weather was again line, and the crowd attracted by the 220 yds. and 880 yds. championships taxed the accommodation to its utniost. Champion was in good nick, and succeeded in winning both tho championships mentioned in record times. In both events Champion was satisfied to keep a little ahead of his opponents. One second was knocked off the 220 yds. record, the time being 2min. 39sec and 23sec. off the n CO o'l' whl ? h Previously stood at ir i fJ 3 ; 55 ??-' to credit of Reg. £ olc er I the titlc . which he did not defend, The ,220 yds. was, for loOyds., a good race, the men being -well bunched, but at that stage Champion, „„f' SOn^ a sl^ ro^ erg , sorted themselves out. At 2%ds. Frcyberg collided with liealy at the turn, and could only finish third, Champion, winning by a couple .of .vardsfrom his club-mate, Welson. In tho 880 yds. Champion pulled F. Seymour and Welson along, and tho public were very interested in tho raco for second place, which Seymour secured. Seymour warmly applauded for his pluckyIhe first three men all finished i"?'??.. thc ,existing New Zealand record. MMillan (Otago) and Murrell (Wellington) pulled out at GOO and 400 yards respectively, the placed men being the only finishers. . afford Brie? an opportunity of creating fresh > figures for the 100 yds., the centra put oil an Invitation Scratch Race, Brice. succeeded in doing tho distanco in C 3 l-sSec., with G. Invitation Scratch Race, 03 l-ssec., 220 yds. championship, 2mm. 39sec., and 880 yds! championship, 12min. 18 3-ssec., will un(loubtedly bo passed by the' New-Zea-land Council, as all the conditions'wera complied with. The 50yds. handicap was won by CookChristchurch, in the good timo of „S l-ssec. Laing, of Woodville, finished second, but was disqualified for not swimming straight. Laing, however, had no trouble in annexing the 100 yds. handicap in 70 3-ssec., and as he is only a boy ho should bo heard of .to advantage durlnrm next few years. ■. . ..Tho exhibition 'of trick and fancy diving by J. Darling; the custodian of the rJapior, baths, was decidedly interestiricr. He was well supported, by Pat Hanna. tho popular local diver. R. Ronayne and ;.- A<s ' S0 1 I ) rendered an excellent imitation of the original performers.

| Wafer Polo Final.' , The iVellington A team' was the popular selection in the final for tho banner, their opponents, Canterbury 'A, were riot, after their performances against tho Wellington B team, supposed to bo at all dangerous. The local Men played with a lot ot confidence, and with very little combination, and suffered defeat by two goals to one, at tho hands of a team of slower but more scientific wPW.n of, the winning side,,/played spl«idi<| beipgiitpq beet Of the Competihons. Brice," of Hie Wellington team, is apparently unablo ,to shoot. Ho had plenty of chances, and Mod ones too, but the goalkeeper; Dingle, had no difliculty in clearing his goal. , Bim Smith, of. the Swifts Club, has been in a winning, vein lately. . Durin" the past few weeks ho has won* the 150 yards distance of the Smith Cup, the 50 thft vnr < i aP l, at ,r lle Swifts ' carnival, tho 200 yards handicap at the recent hampionship meeting, second day/whilo last baturday he won tho musical lifebuoy competition. . . :

The Wellington and Y.M C A riiihc propose, to'hold a joint carnival on Maieh 4, and with an energetic committeo a very succcssful day, 'financially should, eventuate, as tho two proving championships, 100 yards and. 410 yards have been allotted to the clubs. The proEi m<v dl does not strike one as being .any way progressive, has been a «. f is,t° be regretted that tho race for the lady s bracelet, ■ the prinfrnnl im i x® ( L a /' has becn reduced from 100 yards to 50 yards. No doubt larger entries mil be received, but it is to bo deplored that financial considerations have outweighed the good senso of tho committee. What .has become of tho Wellington Club's boasted object of encouraging, distance instead of sprint ovents? Lot us hope it is not a thin? of the past. On.March 4 tide will be full nt.1.23. p.m., so that if the record for the.loo.yards is beaten the time cannot bo Tecognised.

. 1 he. Polo Committee, is once , more in evidence, and, in tho "A" grade the remaining games for the-year have been drawn. 'Although late in the season it has been decided to start the "B" grade and the first match, Swifts r. Wellington, will be played to-dSv. '

March i will be a busy day in the local swimming world, three carnivals Swifts Ladies, Wellington, Y.M.C.A probably, and Victoria • College, being held. The Victoria Collcgo carnival will be hold in the Wellington Colkgo baths. "Trudgeon" has just been informed, by an official of the centre that tho Welling-ton-T.M.C.A. carnival will most likely be held on March 11, as permission to hold it on March 4 may not be granted, the Victoria College and Swifts Club (ladies' branch) having been allotted that dat«. I havo also been informed that tho managers of the various teams visiting hero at the championship meeting had to make their own arrangements for using I .the batfis. The visitors had to pay threepence 'a time, until they received permission from tho City Council to make fr« use of tho baths. Surely, tho centre should have provided tho managers with tickets.

It is estimated that tlio centre made over .£l2O profit at the recent carnival, and. will now be financially strong enough to reimburse the Ro.val Humane Life Savins Society tho money borrowed to send tho polo team to Auckland twelvo months ago.
