LAWN TENNIS.

(Bl SIPE-lINK.) Day's Bay Courts Allotted, following courts at Day's Bay have been allotted for to-day:— • Men's C Grade.—Brdugham Hill I v. Trinity, on Court 5; Oriental v. Petone, on Court 7. Ladies' B Grade.—Trinity r. Brougham Hill 11, on Court 9.' Ladies' C Grade.—Kilbirnie v. Victoria College, on Court 11; Kilbirnie v..Oriental, on Court 12. Last Saturday's Matches. In the B grade, Brougham Hill did well with both teams, winning without much trouble. Tho first team lost its first two rubbers to Crewes and Correll; that Sampson should havo been so signally defeated reflects great credit on Crewes; tho last set reading at one sfage 4—l in favour of Sampson, then 5—3, • and then Crewes took the three remaining games and match, Lawrence's defeat, was straight and to. tho point, although when CorrQll led. 5—3 ; in tho tecoiid-, Lawrence looked - like saving it, taking two games,.-but,'*could only take one ace in. tho -last-garnet As doubles tho Brougfiam Hill pair, did better, but pven tjien' lost ono 'sot. The other matches were well, in favour of Brougham Hill,'but Trlitity can bis congratulated in putting up. a game fight, .and if theyhad played Crowes and 1 Correll together the. result may; have been different. Victoria College only took ' two 'sets from . Brougham .Hill's second . team; Loughmin, playing a fine-game -against Barton: ,'; 1 Daniell .took tho, other one— huite inexplicably—from Hurley., j liV tl(b' C, grade;, Kilbirnie played a' fino ganio against Khandallah," and only lo9t bno match,, Stringer losing to Richardson ht 2—9- , Kilbirnie has .dropped : into good form, but cannot very well overhaul Brougham' Hill's I team, which they meet this day fortnight. v ' Butcher tind Rawnsley 'won their matches for Brougham Hill 11, but Mackersey, for Victoria College, lielptd largely in averting defeat, his side winning by three games. In the ButcherWright match, onco when the score stood at four all—deuce was called eight times, tho match altogether was closely fought, how one leading, now tho other. Smith in his match with Mackersey led, onco at 7—2, and shotild. have taken the match,' but in the succeeding eight games only took fourteen : aces to twenty-nine. - Trinity took all six sets from Muritai, but somo of thc play was very close. St. John's defeat of. Oriental was mainly duo to -defaults,' • the games • played being very evenly contested,. . , •••• In the D grade, defaults again-helped to decide a match, Oriental putting in, a team one short.■ogainst Trinity: According, to club .custom Victoria,iColkgo II defaulted to the same club's t first team. The ladies'- B grade matches "slibiv Petone putting) ■-up good figures, tho win from Trinity being at tho rate of a little mora : than fwoi' to one'.of'games played. Brougham Hill II disposed Of Victoria College nftej; -a, ,goo<l. run. . The C gr'aijlo was made interesting bv the defeat of St.'John's'by Johnsonville) wilh''g'ShU6 Hif'lfHi'fffurTof St. John's. Khah'dallah just managed to win by ono game from Oriental, the eets being eveii', tho absolute failure of'the Messrs. Clark jeopardising. KhandallaU's chances, bi)t the result of tho doubles decided the match. Other matches wero not of any particular interest, but tho notion of lvilbirnio in'preferring to go to Petone- to cS-tain defeat than to win their match by,default is,'to say the least of it, sporting. .'.The match was set down for decision at Kilbirnie, :but tho Petone team did not liko tho court.;,

To-day i '.s''P I l.ay,\: ,

- 111 the B 'graded .Petorie.yshould ' win from Trinity; bit Crowed and Co.. will bo certain toput up a good game. Brougham Hill II should repeat their performance in the first round and win from the Hutt, while Victoria College II will probably default to Victoria College I'for the'sake of club members. ■ \ ■

In tho C grade, Hill has fo defeat. Trinity .to ..assure to itself the premier, position in its grado.'- It should do so;;. •" ' -'

; Johnsohville in the D grado should still triumph. ' ■ '■ y Barrinef postponements and the final round tho ladies' C grade is finished. This day. will seo tho first match in tho play-off. Khandallah nlays St. John's at Khandallah, and all tilings equal should win. Tho previous match tho Khandallah ladies had some difficulty in getting used to the St. John's courts, where there is not much room behind-the back line, and seeing that tho St. John's tactics wero to lob. high and deep it is not to.be wondered at that tho score read s—l in favour of St. John's, although the games, totaling 36—35, did not give them a walkover. • ,

Holiday Matches. ■ • . Levin and Company -hold : a tournament at Day's Bay on Monday last, and a -most enjoyablo day, was spent. Thirty-two matches were got off in the afternoon— within some four hours. The semi-finals only wcro reached, but in the • play-off during the week Hyams (5) won the event from Fell (owe 10) with 14 points in hand. Tho courts were in oxcellont oondition, and satisfaction, was expressed at tho troublo that had been expended by tho association, Waikato Tournament. ! Tho usual popular Hamilton' meeting will not bo hold this year, and no doubt thero will bo many disappointed people in consequence. This meeting has always .attracted a largo numbor of visitors, who have always thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality unfailingly extended., Tho reason for tho stop 19 that Rotorua holds a meoting at Easter, and Hamilton, deferring to them, will help to mako it a big affair. ' V A New Zealand Champion Affair, ' "Romulus," of .tho, has seen fit to carry the controversy relating to Peacock's 'action to such' lengths that Mr. Peacock has been compelled to replv. It is a pity that tho wholo-matter has received such, publicity, and.it cannot do the sport an atom of good to have the actions of any player questioned so stringently.. Mr. l'eacock. knows that 110 has tho approval' of tho majoritv of tennis supporters, and probably "Romulus," in his inmost soul, knows this too. It is inconceivable that Mr. i Peacock could have been, as is ,unkindly suggested, afraTu To go to Mastcrten to meet Parker, and',, despite ."Romulus's" assurance, it, is equally, inconceivable that he could havo refrained from going after promising to go.
