Tho great event of this week has been .tho band contest, and 011 Wednesday, tho People's Day, a very largo crowd gathered in tho show ground to watch tho competition for tho quickstep. It was a gay scene. Tho largo stand was packed from end to end, aild a thick band of onlookers bordered' tho oval, whilo outside' that again wero numbers of trans' and motor-cars filled with spectators. It was a glorious day, and everyone had donned their gayest summer frocks, with which mingled tho bright. uniforms of tho different bands.
Mr. r.nd Mrs. Hall (Christchurch) have taken Awapuni, tho pretty residence of Mr. Alan Strang, whilo Mr. and Mrs. Strang are in England. Miss Tweed is visiting Mrs. Lionel Abraham.
Mr. A'. Monro (New -Plymouth) was in Palmcrston this week.
Miss' P. Keeling lias relumed from a visit to Wellington. The local Tennis Club's toiirnnment opened yesterday on tlio Linton Street courts. A Rood number of entries liavo hncn rejy\ivod from other dubs, and in
tho afternoon thero were many specta-' tors to watch tho play. Among those present wiro Mesdamcs Barmcoat, Randolph, Spencer, Pickett-, and Kendall,' and Misses Porter, Wilson, (Collins, Randolph and Abraham, _ and Messrs. Fitzherbert, Wither, Keeble, Collins, Reed, and Pickett (lion, secretary). Among tho visitors nro Misses Hartgill and Hughes _ (Dannevirkc), and Messrs. Gore, llarlgill, I'isher, and Mnir. The opening of tho now High was a most successful function' on Thursday afternoon. Tho pretty grounds havo been wonderfully littlo disturbed hy tho building operations, and were looking very nice in spito of tho dry weather. Among thoso present wero his .Worship the Mayor, Messrs. Colliiigwood, Vernon, ■ Foote, Hirscli, Bennett, Skerman, and • Iv. Wilson, and Mesdames Vernon, Nash, Collingwood, and tho Misses Glcndining. On Tuesday afternoon a great many friends resnondedito tho invitation of Mr. G. Woolley, who has lately returned from Europe, to bo present at a nri. vato-view of his paintings and sketches obtained during his travels.. These wero most artistically displayed, and wero 'inspected with great interest by thoso present. They included charming sketches of Venice, Switzerland, the Holy Land, and many parts of England. Mr. L. Cohon, (Wanganui) lias been in Palmerston for thb meeting of. the Band Association, of .which ho is president.
