CAPTAIN ALLSOP'S EECORD. On his return to'Lyttelton in tho Breeze on Tuesday morning, Captain J. 1). Alison completed hl3 eighty-sevenths voyago from Lyttelton to tho Chatham'lslands in five years. This remarkable, record (says the Christchurch "Press") has -been acnieved without a 6ingle mishap, in suite of the dlHlculties and dangers of working round tho stormy rock-bound coasts of the Chatham Islands. Tho eighty-seven voyages wero all made in' the steamer Eipple. with tho exception of tho last three, whicn were made in tho Breeze. During the past Ave years Captain Allsop lias coverod over 87,000 miles in-the Chatham Island service, in addition to tho 'hwauds '.f miles steamed,in the New Zealand coastal trado in the intervals between tho Island trips. • The Chatham Island mail contract has now expired, and it is understood that it will not bo renewed, at all eveuts for tho present. . The trawler Nora Nivcn makes occasional trios from Wellington to the Chathams •to bring back tho fish from the freesing works there, and she will carry' tho mails to and from tho Islands, until such time as a new contractmay bo made. ::
COMPLAINTS BY SIIIPPING AGENTS. CAPE FOULWIND LIGHTHOUSE. Mnny complaints aro' mado by the local agents at.the attitudo of those in charge at the Ughthouso .at Cape- Foulwind in neglecting to advise Greymouth of any vessel passing (remarks tho Greymouth "Star"). On Monday, tho. Neahcro passed Cape Foulwind at 3 o'clock, and signalled, asking that tho agent in Greymouth should bo advised of her pa6sing. Although the signal was acknowledged no telegram was sent to Greymouth in spito of the fact tliat instructions had been given always to tend a collect wiro on the, passing of any of the Blackball Coal Company's boats. The consequence of the omission was that tho vessel arrived off the bar before anything was known of her proximity; and if tho men engaged in loading hud not been haudy. great delay would have resulted in gcting tho boat loaded. The matter is of considerable importance, for on the word received from Cano Foulwind depends the whole working of the port. Tho mines depend on it for information as to. the dispatch of coal, tho harbour ofllcialo depend on it for information as to the time of the vessel's entry : and tho timo at whlch it can work the bar. Tho answer Klvea when any complaint Is made Is
that Caoo Foulwind r is not a signal station. this is tho ca6b, the eopner it is maao ono tho better. Another point is that nothing.was heard of the difficulty until rcccntiy. .
