{BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING,
Tho fortnightly meeting of tho Petono Borough Council ,was'held last evening, there being present: Tho Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), and Councillors Short, narding, Piper, Southgate, Broeklelmnk, Voting, List, Jones, and Trueman. ; Tho Institution Notro Dame des Missions, of Potone, referring to an application submitted to tho council last year for an exemption of rates on tho convent property in Britannia Street, and to the council s suggestion that decision should bo deferred pending tho result of a test case in connection with a similar point in Christchurch, pjiuted out that tho caso had been sottled, last October, in favour of tho exemption. Tho Institution now submitted a fresh, application for exemption.'.' • . . . (After a brief discussion, tho council resolved, on tho motion of Councillor Piper, to mako application for a copy of tho full text'of tho Christchurch judgment, as tho question as to residential property fts distinct from school property required to bo carefully weighed. Tho council did not,, it was stated, imposo rales upon the school property of tho convent, and tho exemption asked for was in respect of residential property, A concession in tho latter caso would creato an awkward precedont." MT3wop - and Carter, tor a reduction of a licenso.feo of their steam lorry to £2, tho sum charged.by tho Wellington City Council for similar vehicles, was not granted. , • A petition, signeij by somo twenty-two residents of the Korokoro district, asked that consideration bo given to the matter ■of establishing somo, satisfactory system of "sanitation for tho district. ■" ' ■ . ; Councillor Piper pointed out, in support Of tho petition, that; tho Korokoro district was levied upon, in : common with tho rest of tho borough, for . a genoral sanitation rate. A suggestion had been -'made that these pooplo should also be required to pay a feo for the institution of a pan-system. As contributors of rates to tno general sanitation fund of tho . borough, they not unnaturally '"bucked." It: was resolved to refer the question to ft sub-cnmmitteo for a report.
