J. Devine, of Wellington (formerly u member of-the cou'n-'.cil)j-Mr.- Glenallan .M'Lean.,of -Wellington; Mr. L. E. Reade, of Foxton; Mr. V A. Snndilands, of Feilding; and. Mr. Jas. "Wilson, of Otaki: The deaths of Messrs.M'Lean, Reade, and Sandilands were .the results of accidents.. The :council has also to recor dthe death. (in England) of ■'Mr.' A. P. Buller, until recently and -.for many years past, a well-known and popular member of the society practising- in Wellington. ......

Eliza Crowther, relict of the late Mr. • Samuel' Crowther, 1 and' an old settler in Wellington, died at the; residence of . her daughter,' Mrs. W. Liddell. on Sunday. : The deceased, who was' 88 ■years of age, wasborn-at Halifax,.Yorkshire, and arrived. in New ' Zealand by •the ship Burnham in March, 1842. The late Mrs. Crowtlicr leaves seven sons," John, and Richard (Wellington), William (Shannon), James (Wanganui), .Charles (ltotorua), Samuel (Waiouru), and Joseph (Taupo), and five daughters, Mrs.- John •Prince, Mrs. E." Lowe (Wellington), Mrs. ■A; Bell (Dannevirke), Mrs. W.'King, and Mrs. W. Liddell (Kaiwarra)., There are also . sixty-si? grandchildren, and fiftythree greatgrandchildren! • .
, , Major-General Hamley, C.8.. who was out in the colonies for 50 years, is wonderfully well .vfith. the-exception of his lower limbs. He has just celebrated his 90th year, writes quite in a firm form, more like .tho. writing,of a man of 30, and last Christmas completed a drawing exceptionally well done. When in. Sir. Leo. M. Myers has been nominated for the position of president of the Auckland Chamber - of Commerce during, the ensuing year, and Mr. Geo. Elliott, for the office of vice-president. ' ;'\
. Mr. E. E. Statham, solicitor, hns decided !to contest the Dunedin Central seat at' the next general election. The seat is'at present Mid by Mr. J. F. Arnold.
Mr.' D. M'C'aip.. late superintending engineer of the Union Steam Shin Company of New Zsalnnd, and a well-known shipping identity, returned to Sydney on Monday week looking hale and a trip round tlfc world. Mr.' M'Cnis visited Sydney, Canada, England, and Scotland,' and lie found much to interest him, 1 going through the shipbuilding and engineering works on the Clyd;.
Mr. A. G. Wjjtson, who lias .been rubber-planting in Papua for tlm last four years, is arriving by the' Manuka from Sydney to-morrow, on a visit to Wellington.
