MAKARA COUNTY COUNCIL.
IMPORTANT ROAD IMPROVEMENTS. The monthly.meeting of the Makara County '■. Council was ' held yesterday, there being present: Tho chairman (Councillor-Monk), Councillors J.. H. Haggerty, S. Bryant, V. T. Moore. T. H. .Eastwood, aud F. H. Hawkins. , Tho tender of J. Sims, at Gd. per head, was accopttd in connection -with tho collection of tho county dog tax, tho council 'adding a proviso that a penalty of £b would ,bo'imposed should tho tax not bo collected by September'next. Ratepnyors'iri'arrcar with their obligations are, it was decided, to bo! proceeded against forthwith for payment. Jt was ' Tcsolvcd, •on tho motion of Councillor Moore, .seconded by Councillor Hawkins :-{l) That plans and estimates bo prepared showing tho cost' of widening and replacing in concrete tho old timber-bridges and half bridges on that portion of tho Ngahauranga Gorgo Road between tho Ilutt Road and tho Raroa Estate; and (2) that a special rating area, comprising tho properties fronting this length of road; bo defined, and tho owners of 6uch properties invited to sign a petition enabling tho Makara County Council to raiso tho. money required to carry out tho work, and that tho Government bo asked to subsidise the cost of improving this important arterial thoroughfare." Speaking to tho motion, Councillor Moore pointed out that a comprehensive 6chomo would cost .£IO,OOO. If the adjoining property owners .would agree to a special rate of Jd. in tho XI, that would' provide interest and fund on .£SOOO. Tho Government might then be approached with regard to a J! for £ subsidy on this amount. If tho Government could not do this, then tho council might proceed upon a scheme based on an expenditure of .£SOOO. '
In connection with the foregoing resolutions, . tho council decided to accept the offor of Mr. Mace, of Messrs. Mace and quarry-holders, to supply plans and estimates of the work free of cost, as a preliminary step. The council also decided •to erect a notice warning the, public that the bridge nbove the abattoirs was unsafe for vehicular traffic, and pointing out that persons usuis the .bridge must do so at their own risk.. ■ . ■• :
