ABOUT A TRADE OUTLET.

REPORT OF MR, GOW.

In his final report to tho Department of Agriculture regarding tho New Zealand exhibit at tho Argcntino Exhibition and the prospects of trade with Argentina.in New Zealand products, the Trade Representative states that the bulk of "the seeds and grains were distributed amongst cstancieros who were interested and asked for them. Samples of seed, hemp, twine, etc., were also presented to the Agricultural Society, from which warm thanks were received. Tho kauri-gum and timber exhibits were being taken on to.New York. Regarding- tho main object:of his mission to Argentina— namely, tho-'promotion of an export trado to that country from New Zealand—Mr. Gow states that no.'stone, has been left, unturned to secure information, bearing on the matter. Tho knowledge acquired by him leads him to express his confidence that a splendid, market exists in South America for New Zealand apples, jams, preserves,' bops, hemp, rope, and timber, providing, that theso products can ho landed at a prico that will enable them to compete with goods from other countries, j

. - Mr. Row gives as his reason for the qualification contained in the last sent'neo that at tho present time several shipping companies are engaged in the trade from European and North American ports, and freights from theso aro at a fairly low.-figure; the goods being landed ripht at tho docks in Buenos Ayrcs. Products from New Zealand, on the-other!hand,: hare to be. transhipped at Monte Video and brought on to Buenos Ayresby river-boats. The. latter are all under:.tlin flng'of Jone .company, which, -haying the iroropoly,- charges very stiff freights. Could - this drhwImck be removed, Mr. Gow is confident that South America offers one of the best markets .in the world for the New Zi.-iland products mentioned above. It is also reported that "the market for New Zealand grass-seeds ; should drrclorj ( |iiito', i^' f |gQ.c.d.,opo,, ,jf v .,propi:rlv worked.. The heavy duty on grain such as wheat, barley,! oats, etc., .precludes the possibility of a profitaWo business being done in those lines.even if a demand existed/' Later, this occurs: "Should arrangements'-bo made for the supply of apples from Now Zealand, other produce such as cheeso, potatoes, hams, bacon, poultry, eggs, etc., could be introduced in due cource, and the opinion is given that the field would prove in time to be an unlimited ono for all these articles."

The Inst paragraph, given by the "Journal"' is the following:—"To successfully, establish' business relations, New Zealand, e:;porters must..have a representative in" Buenos Ayrcs.' : Such, representative, moreover, ainst' speak the language of .the country (Spanish),' havo a thorough knowledge! of, existing conditions and Customhouse work, and be able to arrange freights from Monte Video. Intending exporters are warned not to ship-goods to Argentina on consignment, , unless they, have a resmnsible representative to attend to their interests."
