TRADES COUNCILS' CONFERENCE.

. WELLINGTON REMITS. Tho Wellington Trades Council has framed the following remits for consideration by tho Trades Councils' Conference, to be held at Christchurch at Easter:— Factories Act—(a)' ; That conference' demand the- repeal of Section 20 of Factories Act. (b) That employers bo compelled to provide letter-racks accessible to employeos, and to make provision for prompt delivery of all employees' letters, (c) That: wages shallbe paid immediately employment ceases, either by. dismissal or expiration of notice, in accordance with tho provisions of • an award or custom, (d) That Section 25 bo amended to provide that no employer shall or oloy boys or girls under, 17 years of "ago more than 30 hours per week.- (c) That all boys and girls under tho ago of 17 years shall receive instruction for not less than 15 hours per week at' continuation 1 classes.''(d);' That '.-'all chart orders and ready-made suits, shall bo marked as factory-mado by having stamped or printed in a plain and legible manner on hanger up in coat the words "factory-made," in letters at least Jth of an inchj in size. If a shank is used as*a hanger-up, it.shall be sufficient if tho said words are legibly stamped on a label affixed inside neck of coat. On insido of vest there.shall also bo affixed a label bearing thosamo words, as well as on the waistband of lining of trousers, (o) That the Act be amended to provide that all.overtimo shall be paid at double time rates. • (f) That the Factories Act bo amended so as to empower trades unions to take cases for breaches of Act and to give authority to union officials to. investigate breaches of Act. Conciliation and Arbitration Act. — (a) That the C. and A.'Act and Trades Union Act be amended so as to remove restrictions imposed on trades .unions by virtue of Osborne judgment. Shops and Offices "Act.—(a)' That the Act bo amended so as to empower trades unions to take cases for breaches of tho Act, and to give authority to union officials to investigate reported breaches of Act. ~

Plumbers' Registration Bill.—That Cpnfcrcnco approve of tho Bill, and urge its enactments.*

Workers' Compensation Act.—That tho Act bo amended on tho lines suggested by last conference, and, further, that tho Government bo urged to take over tho whole of tho insurance policies under the Act.

That conference protest strongly against'tho spending of public money by tho Government .in introducing labour from outside the country into any industry which is not adequately protected under the industrial laws of our country, (a) That Government bo urged to manufacture all stationery required by them at its own printing works, (b) That all school books for tho Dominion bo printed and bound by tho Stato and supplied to scholars of cost. ■- ■■■„''

That Government be asked to bring down legislation to provido for registration of all partnerships. ,

That conference reaffirm tho principle of free, secular, and compulsory Stato education, and resolve upon united effort to defeat the attempts to introduce tho Biblo in schools and to obtain State subsidies for denominational education.

That tho conference, consider tho question of ensuring "tho loyalty of councils, trades unions, and individual delegates and members to tho decisions of the annual conferences by tho adoption of tho principlo of the pledgo for councils, 'trades unions, and individual delegates and members.

That tho conference urges upon tho incoming executive to register tho Federation of Labour as soon as possible, and that if tho exocutivo finds it impossible to register tho federation under that titlo a new titlo bo selected.

That conference takes into consideration tho matter of appointing an industrial organiser for the whole Dominion. That conference reaffirm the principle of a 40-hour week.

That conference reaffirm an export duty of 3d. per lb. on all. hides and skins.
