■ '■.',; -—-—* ' . • (From Our Own Correspondent.) '■■ -, < /..' Greymouth, February 7. Last Thursday night a meeting of the Wallsend Mining League was held in the Council Chambers, WnlUend. The Mayor of Brunner presided, and explained to the Hon. A. It. Guinness, M.P., who was present by invitation, tho stato\ of tho mine, ana the proposals that aro to bo submitted to tho public meeting called for next Wednesday evening. Tho Hon. Mr.'Guinness approved heartily of tho proposals. In order to assist tho residents in their very laudablo object Mr. Guinness further assured tho meeting that he would do everything possiblo to havo tho mino reopened, it was only last week that 'sonny 40 hands employed at tho Brunner mine were paid olf, tho reason assigned being insufficient demand for coal. . The combined schools picnic will take place next Wednesday at Kotuku. As it is not too long a railway journey frotu Greymouth, and is supplied with native trees and water in abundance, tho day should prove in every way enjoyable. It is expected that fully. 1200 children will tako advantage of tho free excursion. The annual excursion of tho employees of the Dispatch Foundry, Greymouth, took place yesterday, at To Kinga, under the most perfect climatio conditions. Fully 800 picnickers, comprising tho foundry hands, their, families and friends boarded tho train, and tho railway officials had made such suitablo provision for their, convcyanco that everything passed olt without tho slightest hitch. Tho Battalion Band attended and enlivened tho proceedings with somo choico and tuneful musical selections. On Wednesday and Thursday next the, second grand (lower, fruit, and vegctablo show will bo held in tho Town Hall, the Drill Hall, nnd tho Agricultural Hall, Hokitika, under tho auspices of the Westland Horticultural Societv. The show will include tho finest display of sweet peas and dahlias over exhibited on the West Coast. On tho second night there will bo given a concert, tho promoters of which guarantee that it will surpass all previous efforts iu this direction. ~ i I, '
