MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before Mr. \V. G. Eiddell, s'.JI.) ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. . : It aun all Little, a married woman, pleaded guilty to a charge of attemi.ved suicide ou Saturday eveniug. SubInspector Norwood stated that accused had been drinking lately, and sho had gone down to tho wharf on Saturday night and jumped into the harbour. ' Her rescue was effected by a sailor on the s.s. Jlana. The woman had relatives,' who were willing to look after her future welfare. The magistrate, after warning accused that she was liable to a term of imprisonment for such an offence, recorded a conviction, aud order«l her to como up for sentence when called unou.
VAGRANCY. Adolf Grofs, a Swiss, appeared on remand on a charge of being an idls and disorderly person without lawful visible means oi' support. Accused, through an interpreter, pleaded guilty. Chicf-Dctec-tivo Broberg stated that accused originally came to New Zealand to some friends in tho Taranaki district, but, owing to somo difference, he had sinco left them. During tho past month lie had been wandering about Wellington, sleeping out at nights. Last year Grofs had been before the Court on a similar charge, and had then been ordered to como up for sentenco when called on. Tho magistrate imposed a sentence of three months' imprisonment.
FAILED TO PAY THE EAEE. James Ecj-nolds admitted that on Saturday last he.had travelled ou tho steamer Patccua between Picton and Wellington without paying his fare. Ho was convicted and ordered to pay 10s., the amount of tho fare, in default seven 'days' imprisonment. An order was made that tho money, if collected, should bo . handed to tho Union Steam Ship Company.
BREACH OF LICENSING ACT. George W. Burton, for whom Mr. A. L. Jlerdman appeared, pleaded guilty to a breach of Section 117, Sub-Section A, of the Licensing Act, in tliat he had taken a gallon of beer into a No-License district for another person without supplying the name and address to tho vendor. It appeared that the oft'cnco was committed inadvertently, and tho magistrate decided that tlio case would be mot by a conviction and an order to nay costs, lis., and witness's expenses, 3s. Default was fixed at 21 hours' imprisonment.' MAINTENANCE. Georgo Garslcin was sentenced, to ono month's imprisonment for disobedience of a maintenance order, under, which tho arrears amounted to £i Is. Mary Tyrcll was granted summary separation from s her husband, Edward Tyrell, and granted custody of tho four children. Defendant was ordered to pay .£1 13s. per week towards tho maintenance of his wifo and children, and also ordered to pay ,£2 25.. solicitor's fee. Mr. \V. Perry appeared for complainant. A maintenance order in force against Ellen Lucy tannings for tho support, of her four children was reduced to Is. a wocli. All order was made for .CI to bo paid off the arrears, the remainder to be remitted.
Harry Hall, who had failed to comply with a maintenance order for the support of his wife and children, wa? granted nn adjournment for >a Aveck to enable him io comply, on condition that lie paid 255. of the arrears during the day. Wiu. 11. Barron, for whom Mr. D. Jackson appeared, was granted remission of arrears (.£ls) under a maintenance order. William Slattery, for whom Mr. M'! Nab, Blenheim, appeared, was charged with failure to maintain an illegitimate child, of which lie was alleged to be the father. After hearing the evidence, the magistrate reserved decision until Saturday next.
Thomas Chalmers Leslie M'Gregor was charged with disobedience of a maintenance order in respect to the support of his son, the arrears amounting to cC.i 12?. Defendant having recently served several terms of imprisonment on account of drink, nn adjournment for a month was granted to enable him to pay off tho arrears.
OTHER CASES. Claud Alexander Basil Martin pleaded guilty to a chargo of disorderly conduct while drunk, and to a further chargo of refusing to quit the Masonic Hotel on Saturday when requested to do so by the licensee. A line of 20s. was imposed on each charge, in default seven days', im- i prisonment. Accused was also ordered to pay is. witness's expenses. An application for timo to fincl tho money was refused. Patrick Gibbon and Elizabeth Musgravo appeared together on summons, charged with using improper language within the hearing of persons in Abel Smith Street, on January 23. Mr. P. W. Jacksoa appeared for both accused, who pleaded not guilty. After hearing the evidence, the magistrate imposed a fine of 30>. and costs 7s. on each of the accused, the default being seven days' imprisonment. Henry M'Cormack, who pleaded guilty to a chargo of drunkenness, had been convicted on no fewer than 127 previous occasions. His periods of detention included a term at the Inebriates' Homo at Pakatoa, and since his discharge from that institution ho had been before the Court five times. A sentence of three months' imprisonment was imposed.
Maud Sales, alias M'Neil, for drunkenness, was fined 205., with tho alternative of seven days' imprisonment. For using improper language, the same accused was fined -10s., in default fourteen days' imprisonment.
Two first offending inebriates, who did not appear when their names were called, were ordered to forfeit their bail (10s. each), or undergo 21 hours' imprisonment. Another first offender, who had been looked up since Saturday, was convicted and discharged. A female first offender, who had been remanded for a week for curative treatment, was reported to be still unable to appear, and was further remanded until February 13.
Margaret Brown was granted a certificate of character for a servants' registry offico. JUVENILE COURT. A lad ten years of'age was committed to the Wereroa Training Farm yesterday by Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M. The lad had been adopted by a married couple, both of whom were now deceased. A lad of fourteen years was Ix'forc tho magistrate for stealing goods, value 75., the property of Mr. Hugh Chisholm. Ho was cautioncd and discharged.
