Delegates attending the biennial conference of tho North Island Grand Lodge of Druids were accorded a civic reception this morning by the .Mayor, and the conference was opened in tho afternoon. Tho Mayor, in> welcoming tho delegates, of tho importance of ttio work of friendly societies, not only in providing sickness and funeral funds, but as social and educational institutions. lie said mauv citizens who had risen to important iwsitions in tho Stato acknowledged their indebtedness to these institutions. Messrs. W. ITunter (grand president), It. Vleteher, G.T. (Wellington), 11. J. Gilbert. (New Plymouth), G. T. liatley (Canterbury), and others returned thanks for the cordiality with which they had iieen received. After tho conference had beon formally declared open, tho grand president submitted his report on tho work of the year. Three new lodges nt I'olonm, I'oil Albert, and Northcolo had besn opened, and llio funds showed an increase of .£.'1781 for the yeor, tho total amount being .620,283. This amount was allocated lis follows:— Sick and funeral fund, .£18.1110; management, .£77s;.special dealli levy, .£11(13. The membership of tho older in November last was SB2O. Tho grand president umcludcd by urging the metnljors to cooperate in the work of building up and si-j-onsthemng the order.
