THE MOST REV. DR. RYAN. By Telegraph—l'rcss Association—Copyright New York, February fl. Tho Most Rev. Dr. Ryan, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Philadelphia, and a widely-known prelate, is dying.

Archbishop Ryan was born at Thurles. County Tipperary, Ireland, -in 1831, and graduated at Carlow College in 1852 (LL.D. Manhattan College, ISCG, New York University and University of Pennsylvania). Ho was ordained sub-Deacon in Ireland, and after going to .the United States ho becamo liiterhturo at Carondelct Theological Seminary, St. Louis. Ho was ordained deacon there and priest' (1853). Ho served at tho Cathedral where ho becamo rector in 185 G. 110 actcdias chaplain to the Gratiot St. Military Prison and Hospital, St. Louis, during tho Civil War, and whilst rector of Annunciation Church lio delivered Lenten lectures in English at.Rome in 1868 on tho invitation of Popo Pius IX. Ho was consccrated in 1872 titular Bishop of Tricomia in Palestine ( "in partibus infidelium" and made coadjutor-bishop of St. Louis. He was promoted to an Archbishop in ISB3 and on Juno 8, IEB4 was transferred to tho See of Philadelphia. He is tho author of books entitled: "What Catholics Do No Believe','' "The Causes of Modern Religious Scepticism," ctc.
