HOMELESS!
, SCHOLARS—BUT NO SCHOOL.' (By Telccrapl).—Special CorresnondenU . Auckland, February 6. At the beginning of last October, Messrs. Benge and Hattaway, on behalf of Piopio residents, waited on the' Auckland Education Board, and, among other things, urged the immediate building of a school for that growing centre. The school then being conducted in a Maori hall, nnd on one occasion the insecurity of the tenure was demonstrated when the Maoris wanted the hall for a week, and the teacher and children had to go to school underneath a big tree in the vicinity. This fact was also further realised on Monday last, when tha newly-elected committee for the new school district received notice that the Maoris could not grant the use of their hall any longer, and possession was requested next day. One of the part owners of the hall required it for residential purposes, and the next day tlio school furniture had to be removed I nnd stored. On the day that tils school was to commence (Wednesday) the Maori family took up their quarters, with the result that fifty children are left without any schooling accommodation. When the deputation waited on the board they received a satisfactory reply, which was further confirmed by the inspector during his visit in November last, but nothing has yet been done by the board in the matter.
