RECORDS BROKEN.
1, N.Z- SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS. ERICE WINS THE HUNDRED YARDS, GREAT SAYIMMING BY CHAMPION. The predictions that Now Zealand records would bo fractured at tho New Zealand Amateur Swimming Championship meeting, .which opened at tho To Aro baths oil Saturday afternoon were fully justiiied when it camo to tho actual test, tho times for tho only two championship distances decided, tho mile and the 100 yds., both being records. The principal interest naturally centred in tho tv;o championships, and the heats for tho water polo banner, but the other events wero all well contested. Some capital form was shown in the heats of tho 50yds. Open Handicap. Fordbam cut out his heat in 27 2-ssee., Bridge covered the distance in 28 2-ssec., and E. E. Jenkinson in 29jcc. THE 100 YARDS CHAMPIONSHIP. Tho first championship distanco decided was the 100yds.,-which was_ split up into three heats. Healy, of Wellington, did not face tho starter, but all tho other entrants turned out. The lirst heat resolved itself into a contest between Champion. and Brice. Brico and tho Aucklander got slightly tho best of the starting plunge, but Brice was in tho lead at 25 yards, and was first to turn into the final 50 yards. AVith 75 yards covered, Brico was still leading, but two yards from homo saw Champion swimming easily for a place in tlio final, whilst Brice appeared to be "all out." Atkinson was third. Tho time was remarkably "good, G3 l-Sscc., as against the New Zea-land-record of Glsec., which stood in favour of Champion. Champion, Brice, and Atkinson all qualified for tho New Zealand standard badge, tho standard time being GGsec. Uoberts got a little the best of the start in tho second heat, and he held the lead to tho 50yds. turning board. Froyberg, who was swimming well, overhauled Roberts at 75yds., and O'.Hare also passed the Thorndon mAii. Froyberg won from O'Haro by a couple of feet, six inches separating O'Hare anil Roberts. Seymour was fourth, and Bull last. Froyberg qualified for the standard, his time being Go l-ssec. Tho hope of the AVellington Club, M. C. Stranger, swam a fmo race in the third beat, which ho won by a couplo of feet after stalling off a gamo challenge by AYelson, of Auckland.' At tho 50yds. /turn Stranger and Seymour wero in the lead, and the former was hailed as the winner when tho men turned for home. Welson camo strongly, however, and overhauled Seymour, but failed to gat up to the AYellington man. Seymour was a yard behind Welson. Dingle did not finish. Both Stranger afid AYelson broke the standard.
Excitement ran high when the men lined up for tho final. Popular opinion appeared to' favour Champion after his leisurely finish in the first heat, but a surprise was in store. A splendid start was effected, the whole of tho competitors .striking tho water at once. Welson and Brico had a slight advantage at 25yds., but by tho timo 50yds. had been covered Brico was a couple of feet to the good, with Champion and Stranger together next. Brico led throughout the final stretch, and lasted long enough to win by tho narrowest of margins from Champion, who camo very fast over tho last 15 yards. Freyberg was a good third. Stranger fourth, O'Haro fifth, and Wclsou last. Brico and Champion were both given tlirco cheers after tho genoral applause and cxcitcnient had subsided. When it was announced that the young Wcllingtoniaii had broken the New Zealand record\by a second the applause of the 1500 or so spectators was as hearty as it was loud. Although the official time was given as G3sec., several watches agreed in the better time, of G2 3-sscc. At any rate the performanco is a capital one for a young swimmer. Brice is only 10 years of age. He was born in Christchurch, 4 but was taught to swim at Thorndon, his earliest tutor being one of tho foremost, members 'of tho Thorndon Club, Mr. A. W. Smith. Outside of a second in 'the schoolboys' championships and club victories he has never done anything of special note until the present season. Tho timo of : the' last mail in the final, by tho way, was Gsl-ssec., so that every ono of the competitors finished insido the standard.
CHAMPION'S RECORD MILE. Another remarkably fino performance was put up in the mile championship in ivhich Champion, of Auckland, demonstrated very clearly that ho is easily tlio best man in Now Zealand over tlio distance. The Aucklander took the lead from the start' and swimming without the least apparent effort, steadily drew away from tlio field. lie was not the prettiest swimmer in the race, but his stroke was undoubtedly the most effective. At the end of the first 100 yards tlio order of tlio three leaders was: Champion, Welson, Tlcaly. Another 100 yards saw Champion loading by five feet from .Tlealy and Welson, the two last-named'being about equal, Healy making up on tho turns what. Welson gained in the 50-yd. stretches. Each lap ,saw Champion better his position, whilst Welson and ITealy kept together with Rich following them and M'Millan and Schwartz latft. With a quarter of a mile covered Champion had a lead of 17 or 18 yards and Welson was leading Healv by a. yard with tho other threo competitors'in the same order as they stood before, Rich doing much tho best of the three. When the half mile was reached Champion's time was 12min. 335;; c.. Healv's 12min. 53sec„ ami Wolson's 12 mill." 5150e., all under tho standard of 13min. There was a gap of about 35 yards between Chamvn'on and IToaly at 1000 yds., but the Wellington man had becmi to leave Welson. who had dropped back about three yards. Rich was still swimming strongly some yards behind Welson and then came a long space and M'Millan and Schwartz. Healy and Welson anpeared to 1)0 tiring at this .stage, but Champion, in the lead, and Rich, fourth, were both going strongly. Leaving the 1200vds. mark' Champion was 45 vds to the' cood from Healv. who led Welson bv 20vds, Rich another 18yds. off and well- ahead of M'Millan and Schwartz. It was now only a matter of waiting for the end and Champion's time. He increased his lead in every lap and never tired a bit, occasionally mittiiig 111 a spurt as lie overlapped one of the bock men. Going over the la=t (10yds. of the ioinw tho lender lciclcod it in a will and lie oveuhially timsned about seventy-fivo yards ahead of Healy. amidst loud applause. Welson was about twenty yards behind Healy, and Rich, who had come-up well, wa=i on y a fewfeet behind Welson, and M Millan was fifth and Schwartz sixth. When it was announced that the winner's time was 25min. ISsec.. or lflsec. better than his own New Zealand record, tho applause was almost deafening. Healy's tunc was 2Gmin. 2D 4-ssec., Wolson's 26min. 53see., and Rich's 2Gmin. sG?ec, the first four men all breaking the standard. Somo of the lap limes 'for Champion's record journey make interesting reading. They are:—■ 200v<ls.. 2inin. 37 3-ssec.; 300 yds., 4min. 2=ec.: 4-lOyds., rmiin. 58:co.; 500, yds., fimin. 55 l-ssee.; OOOvds., Soiin. 22 Msec.; 700 yds., Oriiin. 49 4-s=ec.; BSoyds.. 12min. 33scc.; 1000 yds., 14min. ISscc.; 1300 yds., lSmin. nr>se'c.; 1500 yds., 21lllin. 31 3-ssec.; 1600 yds., 22min. 56 4-ssec.; 1700 yds., 25min. ISsec.
WATER POLO CHAMPIONSHIP. Two heats of the Water Polo Championship were decided. In tlio first, Wellington B defeated Canterbury B by 5 to 1, the visitors crying "enough" at tho end of the first spell. The iirst goal for Wellington was scored, by AViggins, who badly 'beat tho defending goal-keeper. Allother goal was added for Wellington by Kelly. Canterbury then scored, ■■ Annand putting the ball through after a' pretty piece of plav. Bridge added another goal for Wellington, and before half-time sounded Fordham got tho leather past tho Canterbury goal-keeper on two occasions. Tho second polo heat ivas between Wellington A and Hawke's Bay. Tho latter started well, but were no match for Wellington in tho end, the final score being Wellington 4, Hawke's Bay 1. In the first spell Frcybcrg and Jenkinson scored for Wellington.
A RECORD ATTENDANCE. The attendant at. the carnival was. the largest ever seen in the local baths. Every possible vantage point was availed of. Tho regular seating and standing room was racked, 'mil tho roof of the dressing sheds and tne seaward wall vero also lined with spectators. • 'When the
baths wero full some hundreds of peoplo had to bo refused admission, and in a number cf eases entrance money had to bo returned as the people who had purchased tickets could not find accommodation. Amongst those present were his Worship tho Mayor and Commander Ticrci'lin, of the French f'rigato Ivorsaint. Except for a shortage of programmes, tho arrangements reflected credit on the ollicials, who have had an unenviable task in arranging details of tho big carnival. Ono enthusiast wus heard to offer Is. Gd. for a programme, and, strange to say, tho offer was refused. Tho officials for tho gathering were:— Referee, Mr. Geo. Harris; starter, Mr. 14. J.
