Visitors to tho Waihi gold mine learn (says the Auckland "Herald") that besides gold and silver many othor uictals are found in the lodes. They includo copper, lead, manganese, zinc, iron, and sulphur. Ono of the nioro important is sqleniuni, which, though it occurs in but small quantities, is an element which' requires serious consideration. Wheiv the gold is' alloyed • with copper even small fcraccs of solcniunt niako the metal too brittle for'coinage. Some time ago the Waihi. Company sent its bullion to 'Germany for treatment, but the refiners made so high a charge, on account of the need for eliminating tho selenium, that it was decided to do tho work at the mines. The selenium was found to be removable without much trouble. A quite unsuspected thing happened, however, Selenium is in very small demand, for tho principal use yet found for it outside tho laboratory is in the making of instruments for transmitting photographs by tolegranh, a uso as yet very limited. Tho supply sent wit by ths Waihi Company actually burst up the market. "I bcliove," said the Hon. Geo.
