SALVATION ARMY.
FAREWELL TO COLONEL AND MRS. KNIGHT. Lieutenant-Colonel and Mrs. Knight, of the Salvation Army, were farewelled at the Citadel in Vivian Street last evening, prior to then- departure for Melbourne, where Colonel Knight is to take charge of the Army Training School. During the past three years the colonel has been provincial commander in the North Island, and in all he has filled three appointments ,in the, Dominion, their aggregate term extending over a period of eight years. Major Johnson presided over an attendance that taxed the accommodation of the citadel. Representatives were- present fiom_many Army districts throughout the Aorth Island. Adjutant Gunri, commander of the Wellington City Corps was detained on duty at the Hospital, but forwarded a letter of apology. Major Johnson, in a brief "farewell address, stated that Colonel Knight's services to the Army extended over a total period of 25 years. His character as a leader-had been often clearly shown. Hβ possessed in a high degree patience, a capacity for sympathy and every qualification that graced a Christian gentleman. In his travels up and down tho North Island the speaker had repeatedly heard expressions of the highest respect applied to the colonel. These had come not only from the ranks- of the Army, but in many instances from outsiders. The departure of Colonel and Mrs. Knight would bo very sincerely regretted by all with whom they had come in contact.
Mr. B. A. Wright. M.P., endorsed the remarks of the preceding speaker and said that in his acquaintance with the colonel he had found him a man in every sense of the word. Other speakers who regretted the departure of Colonel and Mrs. Knight and spoke with admiration of the services they had rendered were Adjutant Marshall, Sergeant-Major Crowle, Mr. Hewitt, Major Young, Adjutant Scotney, Brigadier Glover, Major Stone, and Major Howley. Colonel , Knight responded briefly. _ The city bandmaster, during the evening, spoke a few words of farewell to tho colonel's son, Victor luiight, who has been for some time a member .of the band. Selections were rendered at intervals by the Petoae, South Wellington, and Wellington. City, Bands. Other items were contributed by the City Singing Company and the Scotch Quartet, and solos were sung by Mr. Kirk and Jfiss Cunningham. Colonel and Mrs. Kniqht leave by tho Manuka to-day for Sydney. 'They will be replaced in Wellington by Lieutenant Colonel and Mrs. Birkenskaw who are expected to arrive on Wednesday next arid will be officially welcomed at the citadel on the following evening. Colonel Birkenshaw is'vacating the post of principal of the Army Training School at Melbourne, in which he will be succeeded by Colonel Knight.
