Tho building is noiv almost completed, the contractors, Messrs. Sollitt Bros., being well within the contract time. The building is a very handsome one, and far ahead, both- in size and architectural beauty, of thu one that was destroyed- by fire. ■; Tho hot dry weather > still continues, and the water supply is gradually lowering. It is expected that unless wo get rain very soon, the use of water for gardens, etc., will have to be stopped and the supply conserved in every possible direction. To-morrow polls are to bo taken on tho questions of raising loans for tho purpose of carrying tin. height ot tho dam from 1-1 feet to 50 feet, and also to provide mechanical filters. The raising of the dam would increase the storage capacity froui one million to fifteen million gallons. It is expected that tho artesian wells, of which ttiuro are a number in the borough, aro alsa showing signs of giving out, the supply from these having cased off considerably during the lato (fry weather. Mr. J. Jury, for many years a member of the Palmerston Football Club, who is leaving here, was entertained by thu club last night, and presented with a case of pipes. > For the month of January Uio bosSital statistics are as follow:—Patients in 10 hospital on January 1, 38; ndmitted during the mouth, i:>; discharged, 49; died, i; at present in tho hospital, 30. Fifty per coui. of the scholars who sat from the l'aimerston Ilijli , School passed the recent examinations, which bears most favourable comparison with the numbers who passed from similar institutions elsewhere.'
