A LESSON OF THE FLOODS.
PARIS QUAYS TO BE RAISED. , (Rec. February 1, 5.55 p.m.) Paris, February 1. The municipality of Paris is spending .£1,000,000 in raising the levels of the quays along the Seine.
The undertaking referred to in the above message is undoubtedly the outcome of the hite floods which'caused so much damage to Paris. The Seine, a swift and muddy river, in its course through Paris, mid for some miles above and below, flows through concrete banks. In the event of sudden floods the water naturally rises very rapidly in its confined channel. Once the water flows over Hie quays the damage is dans, for it quickly finds its way down the thoroughfares of the city, tho chief of which mostly lead away from the river. It will be an enormous undertaking, for the magnificent bridges which span the Seine in the city will no doubt require also to be raised, for, it will be remembered, they were largely responsible for "banking-up" the water. Not many years ago Vienna faced a similar problem in regard to the Danube, but there they overcame the difficulty, and the new works have so far proved effective, by making a special enormous outlet through the city." .
