TRADES COUNCIL PERTURBED.
OVEK JUVENILE IMMIGRATION. • (By Tclee.raph.—Press Association.) " Auckland, February 1. The Auckland Trades and Labour Counieil is not in favour of tho immiiji'ation to ! £,'cw Zealaud nf boys on conditions similar to those under which Mr. Scdgvick's boys have come out. At tho meeting of the 1 council this evening, a good deal of discussion took placo on this point, and tho .council expressed its entire disapproval of the experiment wliicli is now being tried. The council is not opposed to tho immigration of boys, recognising, that tho Dominion requires more population. Several speakers, however, expressed the opinion that work should first bo found lor the present population of New Zealand. It was also pointed out that where boys were getting ss. a week from far-' ruers, and 4s. a week was being deducted to cover the cost of their passage money to' New Zealand, the boys would only have 7s. a week to (hcmsclres for some tiine. The council was nf opinion that the importation of these boys was a deliberate attempt to lower the wane standard. The analogous question of the bringin" in of girls to act as domesti; servants was also raised by several delegates. Alleaatious were made that girls, who had bi.'cn brought tc- New- Zealand ostensibly to enter dnmrsHc service, \yoro bcjnK- sweated in clothing factories. It pas resolved Hint a protest should be ciadc to the Labour Department against tho bringing out of labour under contract for the purpose of lowering tho wage standard Tt was also resolved that a remit Iw sent to the forthcoming conference of tho Tlr.iplovci-s' Federation, urging it d> pr-.'ss for the abolition of the jy»icm of bringius out labour, under contract.
