NOTES AND COMMENTS.

' [Br Glekcoe.]

The Pahiatua. Racing Club's meetiuc opens this afternoon and there is ever? probability of good , sport; • Racing will take place at Riccarton tomorrow when the principal events will bo the Filly Stakes and Midsummer Haudicap. The Soult filly Dearest lightened up a good , deal after her threo races at Tronthom. At present sho is undergoing a spoil, and will not bo weed again for some considerable time. Soultifo'rni 'is again in active work at Aow Plymouth, and is bowling along very freely. ' t> The local owner, I(. W. Patterson, was rather desirous of-buying tlio Charlemagno ll—Lady jrelen colt at tho yearling sale last week, and ho offered CSO guineas for him, but Mr. Greenwood went higher. Probably Mr. Patterson realises that Pennies is nearly done, and wishes to secure something equally as good to tako his place. At the V.A.T.C. races at Caulfield on January 21 K. A. Connolly thought Chauveliu could not lose the Tooronga Handicap (says the Sydney "Iteferco") and backed him accordingly. With a bit of luck his good thing would have come oft , , but jt came undone through a bad start. Three furlonjjs from home he was Inst in a field of eighteen, and then lost by only a nock to a rank outsider in Masonic (Kilcheran—Purity) who led from start to finish. Masonic is trained by Mr. S. P. Casey, who has had a great run with Mr. Middluton' Melroso's horses recently. The Sylvia Park—Ngnio colt, purchased by Mr. 1!. T. Turnbull at tho. recent Waikanac salo of yearlings, is receiving his education on the Porirua beach, and ]in 3 already been ridden. The youngster takes kindly to his work.

The Feilding trainer A. Attwood i= taking both his jumpers, Reumac and Winchester, to the Ejjmont meeting, but nt present, there is some doubt as to whether W. Young will bo üblo to got back from the (iisborno meeting in time to ride them. Lady Medallist will be the only flat performer from the Torirua stables to take part at the Egmont ineetinsf, and as C. Jenkins will have the mount on the St. Alwynne mare, the light-weight L. Traill, will be able to accept outside mounts. The Chokebore-traincd Nithsdolc, who was brought up to the Trcntham meeting but unfortunately went wrong before racing, has miulo a good recovery, and is a regular attendnnt on tho tracks at Riccartou. 110 is to be 0110 of the field in-tho Hack Welter event to-morrow, and judßing by his work here, will make a good showing. . " At tho time of writing (says our. correspondent) there is every prospect of fine weather for the opening day of the Pnhiatua meeting. Jtr. C. O'Connor will make a first appearance as starter, Mr. H. Piper being engaged at Ricearton. Mr. J..,W. Card, who officiated at Carterton and Martinborongh, will take Mr. Hartgill's placo in the judge's box. Merry Lawn, Yorkshire. Captain, Himitangi, Rapu, and .lackdaw nri> considered unlikely starters in the Hurdles: Millennial, a winner on the first ■ day at Foxton, is among the runner;. Hightlr-n returned honio after the Fox-ton-meeting and will not race at Pahiatua. Voetgang, another Cup, candidate, has gone, to Gisbome, and Waiwarewaro ran badly at' Foxton . and will not start. Arioiu, with her penalty, will bo top weight, and will bo. ridden by A. Oliver. . .. . . Foresbot is eligible to start in the Trial at Pahi.il ua. In the same race Jolly Maiden will be ridden by R. Hatch. Seaweed is greatly fancied for both races which ho is engaged in at Pahiatnn. Charge, Fleet Week, and Restephave been scratched for tho Trial Handicap. Pan Phiio is out. rff . all engagements. Bravery and Kiltie Lass arc out of the Telegraph Hajidicap., Mr. M'Grath brought up five horses, includinjr Zealand. "' Oliver will ride them when his .services are available.

Rongomai was not taken to Pahiatua from tho Hutt. ."., . Tho liover. will' probably start in the Hack Welter ; event nt l'ahiatua. He will lie ridden by.. E. Lowe, who scored oil the gelding at Fcxtou. At the A.J.C. Annivf-rsary, meeting at Randwick last month, Mr. O'Brien's Respect' won the First Nursery Handicap. This was Respect's first run sinco she heat' Popinjay in the Gimcrack Stakes at Banchvick,. and,, in addition to being tho filly's owner, D. O'Brien has the pleasure of being her..breeder. ' Sho is by. Multiform from Heriot, by Grafton from Grafin, by Carbine. Abusive, winner of the Lunisden Handicap and Farewell Handicap on .Wednesday last, has had' a somewhat chequered .career (says tho "Southland Times"). He was bred in Uawke's liny, and purchased by Mr. L. C.lfazlett, of Dnncdin, who, however, could do no' good with him, either as a flat racer or hurdle jumper, and ho was sold tc a goldfields partnership, lie even failed to earn his oats at tho Lakes, ami it is not so long ago that a." half-sharo in him wns parted with on tho purchaser paying for seven or eleven drinks. The number has escaped , memory at the present time. Abusive next turned up in lnvercargill, but G. Cameron could got no good out of him, and ho again changed hands. At this period ho had lost whatever reputation he had ever owned, and it was quite- a surprise to.find him getting on .the winners' list at tho Pine Bnsh D.E.C.'s gathering recently. He improved on this form.by becoming tho champion, of tho Mounted Rifles'camp at'Wyndhamlast week, and-followed this up• by giving Lloyd 'two, winning mounts at .Lumsden. ..His.-.succcss..,in. a. measure, was due to his- cleverness iu getting round corners, a gamo at which'ho. showed himself to bo a past master,.
