WEST COAST ITEMS.
(By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.! J Westport, January 30. The long spell of fine weather since, Christmas has enabled the Harbour Board suction dredges to do splendid work between, and even boyond, the breakwaters in tho open 1 sea, • where what is known as an "outer bar" had formed. It is estimated that the two dredges . remove close on 1500 tons per hour, this including the time taken in conveying tho spoil to the sea. The port is now considered capable of dealing with a largerclass of boat than is now trading here. The recent proposal to raise ,£IO,OOO for the enlargement and improvement of the borough' waterworks met with somo opposition, which, however, had the effect of creating morojntercst than usual in such matters, and resulted in the proposal being carried by a largo majority. It is intended, with the loan money, to lay a 11-inch main from the reservoir to the foot of the hill, with a 12-inch main into the town boundary linking up with present , reticulation, which is fed by an 8-inch main. This .latter will bo retained, thus giving a double lilio of supply. These additions were made to some extent necessary by the big demand for railway shunting purposes.
