' Tho "Cape Times" deprecates Lord ' ■Gladstone's argument that tho native's life was spared because the idea of rape only occurred to the native's mind after he'had entered .the house for tho.purpose of robbery.' : Tho "South African News" is not propared to support or to condemn tho reprieve, but it denies that Lord Gladstonfl put sentiment before justice." PUBLIC OPINION REASSURED, (Rec. January 30, 10.55 p.m.) Cape Town, January 30. South African. opinion is somewhat reassured, .and people are interpreting Lord Gladstone's statement as an indication that he was not actuated by vagua sentimentalism. . Tha "Cape Times" warns him not to court appellate jurisdiction. "The Times" Johannesburg correspondent declares that the most important feature,of tho statement is that its tone indicates the full acceptance of the death penalty as appropriate to such crimes.
