New York, January 29. Elizabeth Phelps Ward, the American authoress, is dead.- — Mrs. Ward was born on August 31, 1844, at Boston, and is'the daughter of the Rev. Austin and Elizabeth Stuart Phelps. She began to write for the press at the age of 13 years. Mrs. Ward was the author of a large number of novels, beginning with the "Gates Ajar," published in 1868. Among her later volumes were "Jonathan and David" and "The Oath of Allegiance," both published in 1909. She married Mr. A. D. Ward in 1888. MR. J. L. KIPLING. {Rec.
